Chinese authorities have tightened security across the province of Inner Mongolia after days of unrest, rights groups and residents say.

Hundreds of riot police armed with batons have been posted at the main square in provincial capital Hohhot.

Access to the internet has been blocked in some areas, and universities and schools are under close watch.

The unrest erupted last week after two ethnic Mongolians were killed in separate incidents.

The demonstrations are thought to be the region's largest in 20 years, involving hundreds of ethnic Mongolians.

The New York-based Southern Mongolian Human Rights Information Centre said more demonstrations had been planned for Monday.

The centre described the situation in many parts of Inner Mongolia as martial law.

Residents of the city of Chifeng told the Associated Press that police were out in force, and the internet had been cut off.

"There's no point in going to the internet cafes since they have suspended business because the internet is down there too," said a waitress at a Chifeng restaurant.

A university worker in Hohhot told Reuters that three entrances to the institution had been sealed off by police.

    Should not have happened.

Why should a car accident stoke such a huge issue that it has to be handled by Senior Communist leaders from Beijing? Or have a whole lot of riot police out and so on.

It should be a police case.

One cannot also differentiate a Chinese from a Korean or a Japanese.

To most non Indians, Nathu Singh and Prem Singh both are the same thing!

Seems like a buildup of issues. All these people coming out on the streets to protest over one death would be quite the over reaction otherwise.

Time to send in the Chengguans.
That's what you get when you have minority groups within a country. It will soon pass as they are only a minority making a fuss over trivial matter.
Just trial and jail the guy involved and get it over with.

    \

    It is their traditional dress.

    See the facial features!

One should have an analytical approach and not be merely a gazer without applying the God given mind!

    Tell us something new

    That is the routine!

Of course the minorities are a disgrace to the Han cultural arrogance. Like the Muslims of Xinjiang, the Tibetans, and the 53 others.

Silly chaps not be get assimilated and be proud to call themselves Hans!!

Typical India attitude. Indians might think minorities are an disgrace but never Chinese :disagree:
It explains why the poor Muslim brothers and sisters in India and the innocent Kashmeries under India influence have to go through for all these years. I guess going by your logic, that would be classed as 'India's Hindu Arrogance' ;)

This thread is almost like suggesting that we should all go out and start a riot whenever we see death caused by a different race. Genius.

    From Time Magazine

    Note the date

    Independent minded chaps.

They want to rule their land themselves, it appears.

But bad luck.......the area has been Hanised and they are only 20% of the population!

A minority in their own land!!

Non Kashmirs are not allowed to settle in Kashmir.

    The 'minority' remains the 'majority'!

    And in China?

Change the demography and make the majority of an area into a minority!!

    What hypocrisy!

And the temerity to spread psychobabble!
