UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - China on Wednesday backed Pakistan’s request for the United Nations Security Council to discuss India’s decision to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, asking for the body to meet behind closed doors on Thursday or Friday, diplomats said.

However, France responded to the request by proposing that the council discuss the issue in a less formal manner - known as “any other business” - next week, diplomats said. It will be up to Poland, president of the council for August, to mediate an agreed time and format among the 15 members.

The Himalayan region has long been a flashpoint in ties between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

The Aug. 5 decision by India blocks the right of the state of Jammu and Kashmir to frame its own laws and allows non-residents to buy property there. Telephone lines, internet and television networks have been blocked and there are restrictions on movement and assembly.

“Pakistan will not provoke a conflict. But India should not mistake our restraint for weakness,” Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi wrote in a letter to the Security Council on Tuesday. “If India chooses to resort again to the use of force, Pakistan will be obliged to respond, in self-defense, with all its capabilities.”

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on India and Pakistan to refrain from any steps that could affect the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Guterres also said he was concerned about reports of restrictions on the Indian side of Kashmir.

The U.N. Security Council adopted several resolutions in 1948 and in the 1950s on the dispute between India and Pakistan over the region, including one which says a plebiscite should be held to determine the future of the mostly Muslim Kashmir.

Another resolution also calls upon both sides to “refrain from making any statements and from doing or causing to be done or permitting any acts which might aggravate the situation.”

U.N. peacekeepers have been deployed since 1949 to observe a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.

    Thank you China :)
It is also injustice to call to treat two different cases identical. Called both sides to do what? Pakistan has not imposed anything such law or curfew on Azad Kashmir so WTH are these goons are talking about? Why can't they drop their hypocrisy for once and call out the oppressor and illegal occupier openly..?

France discraceful pieces of sh1ts. They were slaughtering in the millions in Africa and elsewhere prior WW2, then when the Nazis came, they were sh1tting their pants, and surrendered like the obedient monkeys, lets not forget France was an imperial power back then as well, Germany was not. Then the world came to their rescue, and when they were 'liberated' ...... they started slaughtering again.

I seriously don't know why any sane nation joined the UN other than the imperial monsters, which were granted 'permanent security council seats' with 'Veto' powers.

France wants to mention it as "any other business"??

What an irrelevant country of whining and constantly annoyed frenchmen France is. If France itself isn't the very definition of "any other business" then I don't know what is.

However, France responded to the request by proposing that the council discuss the issue in a less formal manner

I have already predicted this. It will be France which will be put forward by this grouping of yanks, UK and France. Yanks got their *** stuck in Afghanistan, UK is the original cause of this issue also got big Kashmir diaspora within, left only with France with no meaningful interests with Pakistan.

Russia will be a very interesting case and will be watch very keenly. Since China has pulled its weight behind it, and Chinese Russian geopolitics is totally aligned, I will be surprised if Russia veto this.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - The UN Security Council (UNSC) will discuss the situation in Jammu and Kashmir behind closed doors most likely on 16 August, UNSC President Joanna Wronecka told reporters.

"Most probably on Friday", Wronecka said on Wednesday when asked if the meeting would be scheduled for the 15th or 16th of August. Wronecka added that the Security Council would not operate on Thursday.

    @Joe Shearer
So, the UN Security Council is going to discuss Kashmir once again after 54 years almost?
Regardless of the outcome of the UNSC meeting, Modi's Kashmir step is proving to be a 'strategic blunder' for India.

The outcome UNSC is known by all.

But it would be really interesting to see which UNSC permanent member becomes scapegoat and vetoes the resolution

The fact that is being discussed in UNSC shows that it is of grave concern. Indian terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir must be shown to the world.
