China has officially announced that it will finish building its own global satellite navigation system next year, having started about two decades ago.

The £7billion ($9billion) project, called Beidou, has been designed to rival and eventually replace the US-developed Global Positioning System (GPS) in the country.

It's part of Beijing's move to lessen its dependence on American technologies.

The news was announced on Sunday by the Chinese delegation at a summit of The International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems, which was held in Bangalore in India, China Satellite Navigation Office said in an online statement.

Beijing has so far launched 55 satellites into space to build the costly system, which consists of three sub-systems, namely Beidou-1, Beidou-2 and Beidou-3.

In comparison, the GPS system has 24 satellites orbiting Earth.

Beidou-1 was complete in 2000 to provide services to China while Beidou-2, complete in 2012, covers the Asia Pacific region.

Once the Beidou-3 starts operating, the system could serve the whole world, a government report says.

According to the delegation, led by Beidou's chief engineer Yang Changfeng, China will complete all launching missions for Medium Earth Orbit for Beidou-3 by the end of this year.

The deployment of core constellations will be finished in the next three weeks and the entire Beidou system will be complete in 2020, it is announced.

Beidou is the Chinese name for the famed star constellation known in many other cultures as the 'Big Dipper'.

The system is set to be implemented in a wide variety of aspects, including smartphones, autonomous cars, planes and ships.

It will also guide China's upcoming driverless high-speed trains, which are being developed for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Analysts have said the endeavour is one of China's more ambitious undertakings; a remarkable feat for a nation also working towards conquering commercial space flight, cheap energy via an 'artificial sun' and a man-made moon.

China started developing Beidou in the 90s and the total bill is expected to reach an estimated $8.98 billion to $10.6 billion by 2020.

That is the prediction of a 2017 analysis by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission.

President Xi Jinping has aspirations of transforming China into a global leader for emerging technologies and is relentlessly pursuing several avenues in the field of space exploration.

Compared with GPS, BeiDou offers some distinct capabilities such as text messaging and user tracking through its short messaging service.
