Britain's population could overtake FRANCE within a decade as migrants looking to start families flock to the UK

  • UK population's rose by 8.8 per 1,000 in 2015/16, reaching 65.3million
  • France's population rose by only 3.7 per 1,000 to reach 66.6 milllion
  • The Eurostat data says 11 EU countries had falling populations

Britain's population could overtake France to become the second biggest country in Europe within a decade, according to new figures.

The UK population's rose by 8.8 per 1,000 in 2015/16 to reach 65.3million, while France’s population rose by only 3.7 to reach 66.6 milllion, according to figures from Eurostat, the EU's official statistics agency.

Net migration to the UK is running at 330,000 a year but the growth is boosted because many of the migrants are of the age when they might start families.

Britain's birth rate is one of the highest in Europe but the population is also ageing and would shrink if it were not for migrants

Simon Ross, chief executive of the charity Population Matters, told The Times: 'The population growth we are facing adds to the pressure on housing, transport and other public services.

'The government needs to get a grip and devise policies that will slow and destabilise the population of the UK.'

He said Britain would overtake France in the next decade unless something was done to change the current trend.

Last month it was announced that Britain's population had reached 65million for the first time

Immigration was at the heart of the EU referendum debate but the politicians who campaigned for Brexit have been told by EU chiefs that Britain cannot remain in the single market unless it accepts freedom of movement.

Germany remains the most populous country in Europe and, after a year in which it accepted hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers, is set to that way for some time.

Britain's birth rate was 11.9 percent per 1,000, compared with 11.7 percent in France and 12 percent in the Republic of Ireland.

Eurostat also pointed out that the EU's total population would have actually shrunk for the first time, if it were not for the influx of migrants.

They said: 'In 2015 5.1million births occurred in the EU, while 5.2million people died. This means that the EU has seen for the first time a negative natural change of the population.'
The data also showed that 11 EU countries, including Greece, Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania and Latvia, suffered a fall in their population.

Yes, about time .

This is fast becoming a 'find a reason to hate Muslims/foreigners' forum.

There's guys here posting total garbage like' I wear this for my theater role' and 'here's another picture of young white women us dark men can ogle at'

'Muslim woman found breathing in Italy. She was deported according to Italian law.' .
