Washington (CNN)In the hours before the attack on the two tankers in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday, the Iranians spotted a US drone flying overhead and launched a surface-to-air missile at the unmanned aircraft, a US official told CNN.

The missile missed the drone and fell into the water, the official said.
Prior to taking fire, the American MQ-9 drone observed Iranian vessels closing in on the tankers, the official added, though the source did not say whether the unmanned aircraft saw the boats conducting an actual attack.

till, it is the first claim that the US has information of Iranian movements prior to the attack.
CNN has not seen any imagery from the US drones.
Iran has strenuously denied any involvement in the attack.
    T
he same official also said in the days prior to the attack, a US reaper drone was shot down in the Red Sea by what is believed to be an Iranian missile fired by Houthi rebels.
The Pentagon had tough words for Iran on Friday as the US continues to assert its claim that Tehran was responsible for the attack on the two oil tankers in international waters after releasing video footage its says shows an Iranian patrol boat removing an unexploded mine from one of the vessels' hulls.

"We're making sure that General McKenzie and the central command has the resources and the support that they need to conduct their missions," acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said, adding that the US continues to work on building an international consensus that Iran was behind the attack.

Trump says Iran 'did do it'
The United Kingdom released a statement Friday saying it is "almost certain" that a branch of the Iranian military -- the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) -- attacked two tankers.

The IRGC is an elite wing of the Iranian military that was established in the aftermath of the country's revolution in 1979. In April 2019, the US officially designated it as a foreign terrorist organization, a move which was rejected by authorities in Tehran.
No other state or non-state actor "could plausibly have been responsible," the statement added.

But Iran does not appear to be backing off and continues to engage in provocative behavior, according to a US official who told CNN on Friday that Iranian small boats are preventing tug boats from towing away one of the damaged tankers.

President Donald Trump seems convinced that Tehran was responsible.
"Iran did do it and you know they did it because you saw the boat," he said, appearing to refer to the images and video released by the Pentagon late Thursday.
In the video, a smaller boat is shown coming up to the side of the Japanese-owned tanker. An individual stands up on the bow of the boat and can be seen removing an object from the tanker's hull. The US says that object is likely an unexploded mine.

A senior diplomatic source of a US ally told CNN Friday, "It is a virtual certainty Iran was behind this latest attack. The video now nails it."
The source added that the goal of the response from the US government thus far is all about publicly exposing Iranian actions and intensifying maximum pressure.

After the United States withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, it adopted a policy of maximum economic pressure and sent a carrier group to the region, the source said this "Iranian retaliation is designed to show they can disrupt, and push oil prices up."

The Trump administration predicted that the pressure from the United States would bring Iran to the negotiating table, but European leaders disagreed, believing it would empower the hardliners, the source continued.

More BS from the lying U.S. administration.

Ship's operator casts doubt on reports that mine damaged tanker in Gulf of Oman

The Japanese owner of a tanker attacked in the Gulf of Omanclaimed Friday that it was struck by a flying projectile, contradicting reports by U.S. officials and the military on the source of the blast.

U.S. Central Command said the two vessels were hit Thursday by a limpet mine, which is attached to boats below the waterline using magnets. U.S. Central Command released video it claimed showed an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps patrol boat removing an unexploded mine from one of the tankers, the Kokuka Courageous.

But on Friday morning, the owner of the 560-foot Courageous, said that sailors saw something flying toward the vessel just before the explosion and that the impact was well above the waterline.

"We received reports that something flew towards the ship," said Yutaka Katada, president of Kokaku Sangyo Co. at a press conference. "The place where the projectile landed was significantly higher than the water level, so we are absolutely sure that this wasn’t a torpedo.

"I do not think there was a time bomb or an object attached to the side of the ship."

U.S. officials have not yet responded to the claims. But President Donald Trump reiterated U.S. allegations that Iran was behind the attack, telling the Fox News Channel that the incident had "Iran written all over it."

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday that the weapons used and the level of expertise behind the attack suggested Tehran is the culprit.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif angrily dismissed the claims and said they were without "a shred of factual or circumstantial evidence."

The attack came on the heels of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's two-day trip to Iran, aimed at improving relations between Washington and Tehran, which have deteriorated markedly in the last 48 hours.

The USS Bainbridge was dispatched to help the damaged vessels in the gulf. A spokesman for Central Command said in a statement Thursday that the U.S. and the international community "stand ready to defend our interests, including the freedom of navigation.”

“The United States has no interest in engaging in a new conflict in the Middle East. However, we will defend our interests,” said the spokesman, Capt. Bill Urban.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks in a statement Friday and vowed to work with the related countries to secure the safety of the region, but did not mention Iran or other possible assailants.

German official: US video 'not enough' to pin blame on Iran for tanker attacks

Germany's foreign minister on Friday said that a video released by the U.S. is insufficient evidence to prove Iran was behind attacks this week on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

“The video is not enough. We can understand what is being shown, sure, but to make a final assessment, this is not enough for me,” Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told reporters in Oslo, according to Reuters.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday blamed Iran for the attacks on the Norwegian-owned MT Front Altair and the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous, citing intelligence, the weapons used, expertise required and similar recent attacks.

The U.S. military released a video later on Thursday that it says shows Iran's Revolutionary Guard removing a mine from one of the targeted oil tankers.

The captain of the Kokuka disputed the U.S. assertion on Friday.

“Our crew said that the ship was attacked by a flying object,” said Yutaka Katada, president of ship operator Kokuka Sangyo.

Katada, citing accounts from the ship’s crew, said, “I do not think there was a time bomb or an object attached to the side of the ship," according to The New York Times.

Iran has pushed back on the U.S. assigning blame, calling the accusation “the simplest and the most convenient way for Pompeo and other U.S. officials.”

Thursday's attack came just weeks after allegations of sabotage in attacks against four oil tankers off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. The U.S. blamed Iran, pointing to limpet mines that officials said were Iranian.

Iran denied any involvement in those attacks.

can't they get their story straight, first it had to be mines, then after the Japanese pointed out the facts and the TRUTH, Washington says Iran fired missiles. This is like after the false flag 9/11.

Limpet mine spotted on the hull of Kokuka Courageous.

    Limpet mine?

A limpet mine is a type of naval mine that is usually manually placed by a swimmer, diver or frogman on the underside of a ship’s hull.

Named for a type of mollusk, or shellfish, that sticks to rocks and is hard to remove, limpet mines are similarly stuck fast to their targets, usually with magnets.

Unlike larger mines that lie on the sea floor, or buoyant mines that are anchored to the bottom by a chain or cable, limpets are usually not intended to sink a ship. Rather, they are designed to cause a “mission kill,” immobilizing the targeted ship and taking it out of action.

    Caught in the act?

That is an IRGC's Ghasti-class boat.

The relative ease with which those people removed a limpet mine, suggest familiarity with it. The mine was probably a dud on top.

    Assessment of Tyler Rogoway:-

Both are probably true. Iranian small boats could have, and likely did, lob projectiles towards the ship and planted mines on it. Even the firing of projectiles could be used as a distraction to mine the hull without being noticed. Iranian small boat swarming tactics including using various weapons on larger vessels simultaneously.

Video shows the removal of the mine... why show only half a video, when someone PUT THE MINE THERE. If they put the mine there, why not show that? These are then at the realm of psy-ops.

I have never seen a sea mine jump up in air and damage the hull above water line. Will someone explain to me, is it an under water mine or a fly fish which damaged hull above water level? Lol

Us posted image says likely mine. How the hell mine jumped out of water?

The video is withholding evidence if the IRGC arrived to put or only removed the mine. There is a big difference between the two. There is yet to be released a video showing the IRGC putting the mine there.

That is why this whole thing is either a false flag or a psy-op, or both.

Tyler Rogoway is a professional and he explained the probable attack scenario:

Both are probably true. Iranian small boats could have, and likely did, lob projectiles towards the ship and planted mines on it. Even the firing of projectiles could be used as a distraction to mine the hull without being noticed. Iranian small boat swarming tactics including using various weapons on larger vessels simultaneously.

Recheck the information I provided in my post above. Connected some dots there.

    B/W

Yutaka Katada, President of Kokuka Sangyo, which owns the Kokuka Courageous, told reporters that the ship had been attacked twice in the space of three hours. The ship was carrying 25,000 tons of methanol from Saudi Arabia bound for Singapore. The attacks caused a fire in the engine room and led to the complete evacuation of the ship's crew.

This gets deeper by the hour.
