BD eyes global halal meat market

With the global halal economy booming, public and private-sector stakeholders have made a move to increase halal meat exports abroad, according to sector insiders.

The fisheries and livestock ministry has already urged Brazil to invest in halal meat products in Bangladesh for export to different global destinations.

Recently, fisheries and livestock minister Narayan Chandra Chanda sat in a meeting with Brazilian ambassador in Dhaka Joao Tabajara Oliveira.

Mr Chanda proposed the South American country through the envoy to set up a joint venture in Bangladesh for exporting halal meat, a ministry official told the FE.

To grab a big share of the global market, the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has also taken an initiative to increase exports of halal products, including meat.

"We are planning to expand our export market for halal meat and other product," DCCI president Abul Kasem Khan told the FE.

Ossama Imam, a halal food expert of a quality certification company in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will arrive in Dhaka next month, he said.

The DCCI will seek his suggestions on how to increase exports of halal meat products.

"We will sit with the UAE expert in the second week of August," said the DCCI chief.

Countries like Brazil, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand are dominating the halal market globally.

Currently, Bangladesh exports an insignificant volume of halal meat abroad.

Insiders said the predominantly Muslim country can grab a sizable share of the global halal market, especially in the Middle East countries.

But this calls for application of modern technology and government policy support, they added.

Lol.....our meat market can barely fulfil our demand. That's why Such high price for per kg beef, mutton.........exporting it while depriving our own people is a terrible thing to do.

It may not be that worrisome. In case the demand for meat rises due to exports to other markets, the domestic production volume will also rise. This may cause the unit cost to come down. However, I am not sure if the foreign markets will accept BD meat products because even the countries in the ME have stringent quarantine laws.

The news report says of one Ossama Imam to come to Dhaka who would advise the GoB on the quality of local products. I also think his mission may also check about the foot and mouth, and other cattle diseases in BD.

Look at the pic in OP......BD beef has 1% chance to be accepted in a GCC or developed country....we can export to Syria...I guess.....beef would be better to export than jihadists.

We cannot fulfill our own demand and we expect to export halal meat to other country. Already meat is out of reach of poor even middle class people selling beef tk 500 to mutton tk 700 per kilo any export certainly hike the price.

I think eating a little less beef will help our health situation as a nation.

Half of Bangladeshis go on anti-cholesterol medicine (Lipitor) by the time they are forty. Why clog your arteries needlessly....

Historically - I believe we were mainly a major vegetable consuming nation, especially for the lower middle and lower classes.

Think it is much better if red meat is expensive in BD.
Lentils, chicken and some fish can provide much healthier protein.

I also think so. Actually Bengali Muslim consume huge amount of beef but the main reason is hindutva cult .
As hindutva beat peoples if they carry meat , and that give us a boost to consume more meat .
Now @Bilal9 Bhai , read my analysis carefully .
Who are the largest beef exporter ? India right ?

So this is the solid proof that indians never ever offended by consuming beef , since they export beef and probably they know that importers are not buying beef to worship it!
So still why they beat Muslims in India?
Here is the dirtiest business policy of hindutva .
They know that if they beat Muslims for eating beef then BD Muslims will be triggered and will consume 3 times more beef than normal amount .
So Indian beef export will be increased , and they will earn more money by exporting beef to us .

All are dirty policy of India to export beef ( or sending by smuggle) .
So we should eat beef but must not exceed limit in order to remain healthy.
P.s this analysis is just my personal analysis , but it's a high posipossibi IMHO . As there is nothing bad that sanghis can't do !

My dear @Centaur Bhai, I think you are making a mistake. India is cheating the world by exporting buffalo meat and tag it beef as per the US classification. That India can do any horrible thing to earn a dime.

But, eating too much beef has caused the BD Muslims to become fat and unhealthy with blood pressure requiring them to visit Hindutva India for a proper treatment. Please read the excerpt below to know about Indian beef export,

Where Indian buffalo meat exports go
Vietnam is by far the largest importer, data show; it is likely, however, that the bulk of the over 6 lakh tonnes of carabeef shipped to Vietnam finds its way unofficially to China

Brazil and India have been vying for the top spot in world beef exports over the past several years. In 2014, India dislodged Brazil from the number 1 slot, according to United States Department of Agriculture data. The latest data from 2016 show India and Brazil tied on top — with both countries accounting for just under 20% each of the world’s total beef exports. They, along with Australia and New Zealand, are the world’s largest beef exporting countries, as per the US data.

An important clarification here is that India does not officially export the meat of cows. The so-called “beef” that it exports is buffalo meat, which is also known as “carabeef”. The United States “beef” data includes carabeef. The bulk of India’s buffalo meat exports are to Asian countries — 11 of the top 15 destinations for buffalo meat by value in 2015-16 were in Asia and 3 in Africa (Algeria, Egypt, and Angola). Russia was the 15th destination — at No. 15 in the list of the top 15.

Revealed: The world's most vegetarian country

To celebrate a certain country's indepedence day, we've mapped the world according to who eat the most (and the least) meat. The most vegetarian country in the world? That would be Bangladesh, founded on March 26, 1971, where just four kilos of meat are consumed by a typical person in a typical year, according to 2009 figures (the latest comprehensive statistics we were able to obtain) from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

It is followed by India, Burundi and Sri Lanka, while the top 10 is completed by five African countries: Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Eritrea, Mozambique, Gambia and Malawi.

The 20 countries that eat the least meat
    1. Bangladesh - 4kg of meat per person per year
    2. India - 4.4kg
    3. Burundi - 5.2kg
    4. Sri Lanka - 6.3kg
    5. Rwanda - 6.5kg
    6. Sierra Leone - 7.3kg
    7. Eritrea - 7.7kg
    8. Mozambique - 7.8kg
    9. Gambia - 8.1kg
    10. Malawi - 8.3kg
    11. Ethiopia - 8.5kg
    12. Guinea - 8.6kg
    13. Nigeria - 8.8kg
    14. Tanzania - 9.6kg
    15. Nepal - 9.9kg
    16. Liberia - 10.4kg
    17. Uganda - 11kg
    18. Indonesia - 11.6kg
    19. Togo - 11.7kg
    20. Solomon Islands - 11.9kg
An average UK resident eats 84.2kg of meat each year, putting it 30th on the list, but it will come as no surprise to discover that the biggest guzzlers of animal flesh are our American cousins. A single US resident consumes, on average, 120.2 kilos - 30 times more than those from Bangladesh.

The tiny Middle Eastern state of Kuwait, surprisingly perhaps, comes second, followed by Australia (no shock there, given all those barbies), The Bahamas and Luxembourg. New Zealand, Austria, French Polynesia, Bermuda and Argentina complete the top 10.

It is interesting to note that several of the most meat-hungry countries are also among the most obese. The US is 12th in that respect, Kuwait 9th, the Bahamas 10th, New Zealand 24th and Australia 26th. Those countries for which no data is available appear in grey on the map.

This man is probably not a vegetarian
The 20 countries that eat the most meat
    1. USA - 120kg of meat per person per year
    2. Kuwait - 119.2kg
    3. Australia - 111.5kg
    4. The Bahamas - 109.5kg
    5. Luxembourg - 107.9kg
    6. New Zealand - 106.4kg
    7. Austria - 102kg
    8. French Polynesia - 101.9kg
    9. Bermuda - 101.7kg
    10. Argentina - 98.3kg
    11. Spain - 97kg
    12. Israel - 96kg
    13. Denmark - 95.2kg
    14. Canada - 94.3kg
    15. St Lucia - 93.6kg
    16. Portugal - 93.4kg
    17. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines - 91.4kg
    18. Netherlands Antilles - 91kg
    19. Italy - 90.7kg
    20. Slovenia - 88.3kg
Vegetarians should take some solace from the fact that meat consumption is declining in half of the countries listed above. Between 2002 and 2009 the amount consumed by US residents fell from 124.8 kilos per person to 120.2, for example, in Luxembourg from 141.7 to 107.9, in New Zealand from 142.1 to 106.7 and in Denmark (previously the world's biggest consumers of meat) from 145.9kg to 95.2kg.

The countries where tourists outnumber locals
A total of 51 countries receive more annual tourists than their total number of residents, with the tiny principality of Andorra topping the charts (you'll need to zoom in to see it). It welcomed 2.36m tourists in 2014, but just 70,000 people call it home. That works out at 33.5 tourists per resident.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, is the least touristy nation on the planet. For every local there is just 0.000776 tourists.

I am surprised to read the news. Only a few days before posters like @Homo Sapiens @UKBengali and @Bilal9 were celebrating the self-sufficiency in beef/meat production and consumption.

Now, when the GoB is thinking of exporting beef and arranging seminars on this possibility, you are here to stop it from happening. I wonder what is the reality? Is not your data quite old?

That is 2009 figure. Many thing has changed since then. Even for 2009 figure that figure does not seems reliable. In Bangladesh at least 5 million cows are slaughtered each year based on old estimate. If we consider cow weight 100 kg (a low estimate), it itself comes to 5 kg per adult per year beef consumption considering 100 million adults are there in the country. Plus they consume chicken and mutton plus during eid ul adha more consumption happens.
