Huge number of Bangladeshis are jobless. Many risk their lives and go abroad hoping better future because there is huge job crisis in the country. People are not getting job. They go underground out of frustration and do illegal activities including drug trafficking, rape and illegal migration to India and other countries in search of job.

Job seekers on Saturday demanded that the government should extend the age limit for government jobs from 30 years to 35 years.

They made the demand at a human chain held at the Raju Memorial Monument at Dhaka University.

Several hundred job seekers, who completed their graduation from different universities, held the demonstration under the banner of Bangladesh General Students’ Council to press home their demand.

Speakers at the human chain termed the 30-year age limit unfair and said that most students could not complete the graduation before the age of 28 years as because of session jam.

They also said that the age limit for public services should be increased as the government had already increased the retirement age for public servants from 57 years to 59 years.

The agitating students also threatened to go for a tougher movement if their demand was not met immediately.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday reiterated her government’s stance for not increasing the age limit to enter in government jobs.

“A student can sit for exam for job within the age of 23-25 if anyone concentrates to regular study,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League President, said this while briefing the media on her five-day official visit to China at her official Ganabhaban residence in the capital.
The premier made the logics and the statistics amid the demand of job seekers to increase the age limit to 35 to enter in government services. Mentioning that birth registration service is available, the Prime Minister said a student can pass Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam in the age of 16 and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) just two years after.

“Even one can pass Honors within four year while Masters after one year and sit for job exam within the age of 23-25,” she said.

Referring to last three BCS results, the Premier said that pass rate is very low among those who are comparatively older.

The Prime Minister said that it is tough to get a job at the age of 35 after managing household activities and family.

Actually we had session jams, so many old days students finished their education late. And also we have a tendency to get govt job because most of us seek a secured old age with pension of govt job. However this tendency will reduce if govt slowly bring various non govt jobs under pension plans too.

Hopefully govt assured that slowly they will do it for all jobs including private jobs too. But time will tell us when they will do it.

Even if the age limit is extended to 65 for the govt jobs it will not solve the unemployment issue unless private companies build manufacturing factories and hire workers. Govt alone cannot provide jobs to 160 million people.

    Star Online Report

Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Kalyan Parishad today issued an ultimatum to the government asking it to extend the age limit for all public and private jobs to 35 years by tomorrow.

“Otherwise, we will for a harsher movement,” Mozammel Miazi chief coordinator of the Chhatra Kalyan Parishad came up with the threat at a press conference at Dhaka University Sangbadik Samati office a day after the prime minister ruled out the possibility of extending the age limit.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at a press conference at her official Gono Bhaban residence yesterday, placed a number of arguments in support of keeping the current age limit unchanged.

Hasina said the success rate of the BCS exam candidates aged 23-25 is higher than that of examinees aged 25-27 and much higher than that of those aged above 29. Earlier, she told the parliament that the freshers will be deprived of jobs if the age limit is extended.

Protesting the government stance, Miazi, in his written statement, said, “The prime minister made self-contradictory and illogical remarks in this regard. The result is not a big factor, we just sought the scope for submitting application,” he added.

The PM at the press conference said that there will be trouble in maintaining family and children if the appointment is given after 30 years.

Rejecting the PM’s argument, Miazi said women will be more opportunists if the age limit is increased, they will be able to uphold their capability.

Citing instances of several countries in this regard, Miazi said there is no link between increasing the age limit of entering the public jobs and the pension scheme.

Developed, developing and underdeveloped countries have increased the age limit and brought down their unemployment rate by increasing GDP, he said.

In this context, what is the logic of not extending the age limit for public jobs to 35 years, he raised the question.

He said they will wait for the government’s announcement till tomorrow unless they would go for a vigorous movement.

He hinted about a grand rally in Dhaka to press home their demand.

It is not about age. I have met a few in Bd who passed the civil service exams but the govt did not employ them because positions were not available. So, what these bloody Kalyan Parishad guys are going to do in such a situation? Go to Malaysia or the ME and do whatever jobs are available there.

Thing is, BD is overflooded with all kinds of general education private Universities. People graduate there in random. So, some people are with University degree but remain unemployed. We are just blindly following India's footsteps. BD needs many factories instead of many general Universities.

Better to follow the example of the German higher education system. Students who are not meritorious cannot enter a University only because their parents have money. They enter post-HSC or post-SSC vocational schools. The number of Universities there is limited only to the good students.
