Sheila, a third-year student of physics at Dhaka University, will represent Bangladesh in the main event of 68th Miss Universe competition, to be held in the US this December. Bangladesh is going to participate in the competition for the first time ever.

Shirin Akhter Sheila was crowned in the inaugural edition of Miss Universe Bangladesh, at the grand finale held at the International Convention City, Bashundhara, in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The winner was crowned by Indian actor and model Sushmita Sen, who herself won the title of Miss Universe in 1994. Speaking at the event, Sushmita said: "I am very glad to be a part of this momentous occasion. Tonight we make history. Do you want to know how? We make history because for the first time, a girl from Bangladesh will represent this beautiful country at Miss Universe competition. Twenty-five years ago, I represented India at that same competition, and my life was changed forever."

Sheila, a third-year student of physics at Dhaka University, will represent Bangladesh in the main event of 68th Miss Universe competition, to be held in the US this December. Bangladesh is going to participate in the competition for the first time ever.

Alisha Islam was announced as the first runner-up of the competition, and the second runner-up title went to Jessia Islam. The other contestants in the Top 10 were Tamanna Ishrat Sohani, Maria Mumu, Sanowar Tayefa, Afla Arman, Irana Ishrat, Smriti Akhter, and Anita Islam.

The finalists were judged by Sushmita Sen, singer Tahsan Khan, Persona Beauty Salon Managing Director Kaniz Almas, Bangladesh Heritage Craft President Tootli Rahman, Pulse Health Care founder Rubaba Dowla, Green Delta Insurance MD Farzanah Chowdhury, Flora Bank MD Rafiul Islam, international cricket commentator and former cricketer Athar Ali Khan, former Miss Ventura County California and Johnson County USA Star Faruque, and Invicta Healthcare Ltd CEO and MD Dr Zareen Delawar Hussain.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader attended the event as a special guest at the grand finale.

Earlier on October 15, the crown of Miss Universe Bangladesh was unveiled at a gala event held in Amisheé Fine Jewelry store in Gulshan, Dhaka.

Registration for the competition began in the end of July. The first round of audition started with over 12,000 applicants. Then the elimination process started and, after three months of boot camp, a winner was chosen.

    Looks meh, disappointed

I think Jessia Islam has a great face, symmetrical and attractive

Some are okay looking but I don’t see someone that spikes my interest. Need to look through the rest

Well by all means take a look. :-)

    Plenty there.

I don't think even middle class families in Bangladesh (and the newly rich, previously lower middle class) allow their daughters to go into modeling profession (with some notable exceptions from 'Chetona'-tilted families).

All you have as models are girls from lower middle class families with new money - who very rarely know how to present themselves as fashionable even if they had symmetrical looks. Pedigree and good breeding is a rarity (pardon my snob comments). It takes a LOT to know how to execute sophisticated poses and to avoid lacklustre strutting...:-)

This is unlike India or Pakistan where feudalism and unequal class division has bred a large number of rich folks who are really way more Western-culture minded although they live sheltered mega-rich local lives in those countries behind tall walls. These people are the models in those countries in most cases who represent their fashion world and participate in Miss Universe contests etc. (in India's case, not Pakistan).

Bangladeshi nouveau-rich will need a couple more generations to get there. The existing ultra-rich in Bangladesh don't live here anymore (Aziz Mohd. Bhai lives in Bangkok for example, ditto for other educated ultra-rich). One can get rich in one generation, but takes three generations of education and sophistication to change lifestyles (even if you can go to plastic surgeon and fix your 'tera-beka' looks like in S. Korea).

I know I said a lot of demeaning things above - but the subject is modeling and it is a rather ruthless profession that qualifies women on looks only.

If judged other than with looks (enhanced or otherwise), all these women are probably unique in their inner beauties...and who are we to judge them this way? Only Allah can.

By the way Sushmita Sen's family is originally from Bikrampur (City of Courage - 20 km South of Dhaka) in Bangladesh, as are most of the higher Bengali Vaidya caste folks with 'Sen' surnames. They trace their ancestry from the Sen Dynasty in Eastern Bengal who defeated the Pala Emperors.

Unknown face @jamahir bhai. Never saw her before. This type of face is rather common in Bangladesh...

And for good reason. I hope it doesn’t change. Even girls from old money family of Eastern Asia do not go into degrading profession like this. Well sorry to be judgemental, some may argue but Michael, you like Ukrainian girls who model, yes because they would rather work and be independent than sell themselves to sugardaddies, so offense to sugar babies but y’all are prostitutes, no offense to prototypes if it’s being forced upon you, ouch no offense to entrepreneurial prostitutes either, I’ve dug myself a huge hole

Agreed, twat looking people often mix with good looking people just because of money or power, generations of ugly girls in bd is on the rise, however I see there are good looking Bengali guys, many indistinguishable from Arabs or European guys. I would go as far to say if ukraine is a treasure trove of beautiful women, Bangladesh is a treasure trove of handsome dudes

Lmao, Korean girls are hot bruh

Well, inner beauties aren’t judged but praised. I’ve had 5 examples of such women whom I either fell in love with or had a crush on, all were/ are way above my league, all I failed to continue with :/

I’m from Bikrampur :P no I’m serious though, the last generation of beautiful woman in our family was my great grandfathers sister, whom a supposed king forcefully married after torturing my great grandfather, and because at that time we lost all our property and power and family far away, my GG had to get her married to that fag, my grandma was good looking but obviously not out blood, my aunts are ugly... (thanks to my short, black great grandma) Most men in our family are olive skinned/ brown, thanks to our GG who was fair/whitish and extremely tall

Now depending on the woman I marry, I estimate my children will be 6ft and much fair skinned than me albeit still olive skinned

I agree but most Koreans were/are not happy with their original looks (competition for looks gone berserk), I expect the same thing to happen in Bangladesh at some point, this is already happening in China. Look at these before and after pictures following plastic surgery. Sad thing is - these people can be successful in hiding their looks but their offspring will still carry the genes...hopefully they can attract good looking boys...

Well like they say - better luck next time. :-)

There is still time of course.

Well good luck - there are a lot of guys in Bangladesh above 6 ft. height or close to it. Nutrition and exercise helps build height and prevents nutrition-related dwarfism (lack of quality protein not fufilled by eating daal etc.) which is common in the lower classes in our neighbor countries on both sides. Average height of Koreans and Japanese increased at least two inches after their economies improved in the past fifty years.

OK here is one other no-name beauty. Doesn't look like she has plastic surgery - at least not a botched one. :-)

True, I find it hard to believe but great grandfather was nearly 7ft tall according to my father and basically white!? Which leads me to believe he wasn’t a native, given hat we also have family in Pakistan to this day, no connection however.
Marrying into short, clapped women from back then has contributed to at least shortening of height... grandfather around 5ft... father around 5 ft 7 I’m an inch extra... you’re right, nutrition also helps

I think Anika Kabir, Nadia and Mim are actually some good looking Bengali girls.

Apart from the first girl, I think he rest look still clapped.

A few recent shots of Mehzabeen Chowdhury, she made the transition from modeling to acting pretty smoothly. She fits the Bangladeshi 'girl next door' persona rather nicely as well.

On the other end of 'not the girl next-door variety' is 'Shorolipi'. I see a bit of 'Asian Madonna' in her.

Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss America so on and so forth; these beauty pageants have a history. Of course, the idea and the concept that eventually materialized was put into action at some point in time. However, that point isn’t defined exactly. But, according to the internet, these beauty contests gained more respect after the first ‘modern’ Miss America contest; which was held way back in 1921.

Fast forward to 2019, one of the most prestigious pageants of all, Miss Universe holds great importance around the globe. Countries compete for the crown that comes with many perks. Pakistan has never participated, but, Miss Pakistan World winner of 2019 is representing Pakistan for Miss Tourism International competition in Kuala Lumpur.

However, Bangladesh is making headlines pertaining to the upcoming Miss Universe 2019.

Bangladesh becomes the first-ever South Asian Muslim country to participate in Miss Universe Pageant!
The beauty with brains that will be representing Bangladesh in Miss Universe 2019 is Shirin Akter Shela who was just recently crowned in the inaugural edition of Miss Universe Bangladesh, last month. The ceremony was held in at the International Convention City, Bashundhara, in Dhaka and Bollywood diva Sushmita Sen who herself won the Miss Universe title back in 1994 did the honors of crowning Shirin.

    Via The Daily Star
Shirin Akter is a third-year physics student at Dhaka University and her father is a member of the Border Guard Bangladesh. Moreover, she revealed during the pageant that her father is a great inspiration for her. Furthering her talk, she spoke about her aims which include working for the betterment of her country; that Shirin said can only be achieved by winning Miss Universe.

Sushmita Sen during an event celebrated Shirin’s win and said, “I am very glad to be a part of this momentous occasion. Tonight we make history. Do you want to know how? We make history because for the first time, a girl from Bangladesh will represent this beautiful country at Miss Universe competition”

    Via Dhaka Tribune
She continued on, saying, “Twenty-five years ago, I represented India at that same competition, and my life was changed forever.”

Sushmita Sen is no ordinary woman. Apart from being an actress and model, she is the first Indian herself to win the prestigious Miss Universe crown. However, Sushmita won the world-renown pageant at just the age of 18. This is a great motivational factor for the young Miss Bangladesh who is set to represent her country in the 68th Miss Universe Pageant, this year.

Do you think Bangladesh might win?
