A glass platform atop a cliff, the largest of its kind in Asia, is nearing completion in Chongqing, southwest China.

The hanging platform, which is 11 meters wide and 26m long, stands 280m above Karst Valley in Wulong National Geological Park. The glass platform will provide adventurous tourists with a breath-taking panoramic view of the landscape under their feet.

The park boasts three naturally-formed stone bridges, the largest such complex in Asia. In addition, it also has sinkholes, cliffs, caves and other Karst landforms.

The project was designed and planned by a team of 20, according to local media. It will be made from three layers of toughened glass, a single pane is able to bear a maximum weight of 10 tonnes.

The platform is due to open to the public before the upcoming week-long National Day holiday.

The project comes in response to the changing taste of tourists, as many are bored with "conventional sightseeing".

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a UNESCO world heritage site featuring pillar-like peak formations in Hunan Province, central China, replaced its rickety wooden-plank road that hugged the edge of a cliff with a similar glass structure in April 2014. The 1,500-meter-long "road of the brave" had attracted over 4.3 million visitors up to the end of March this year.

China is set to open what is claimed to be the largest glass platform in Asia near Chongqing.

The country has seen a spate of dizzying glass structures open in the past several years, including a 300-metre-high glass bridge in May of this year and the world’s longest glass cantilever bridge in April. The latest will be a giant transparent viewing platform suspended eleven metres off a cliff edge in Wulong county and have a view 280 metres down to the bottom of a verdant canyon. It is expected to open in time for China’s National Day on the first of October.

The viewing deck, may frighten some, but experts from both China and abroad have been assuring the public of its safety features

The popular area is a favourite for tourists and featured in the American blockbuster, Transformers 4: Age of Extinction

Sky Walkway - Tianmen Mountain. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Jutting out from a sheer cliff 1,430 metres high, the glass skywalk of China's Zhangjiajie National Forest Park offers sightseers terrifying thrills and clear view of the mountains below. The bridge encircles the vertical cliffs of Tianmen Mountain in Hunan province. Sightseers are requested to wear supplied cloth slip-on footwear so the he 3ft-wide, 2.5in glass is not marked.

And while walking across the glass may be a scary prospect, spare a thought for the construction worker who, as the pictures show, did not have the luxury of a safety barrier when it was being built.

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass bottom bridge: World's highest see-through skywalk gives views from 300m
    • UPDATED 11:11, 19 MAY 2015
    • BY JON LIVESEY
The transparent platform, which is also the world's longest glass-bottomed bridge, is due to open in July this year

Don't look down! The glass-bottomed bridge in Zhangjiajie is the world's highest

If you suffer from vertigo, you might want to give this attraction a miss.

Hovering over a dizzying 300-metre drop, Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon's glass-bottomed bridge, in China, is the world's highest see-through skywalk.

It's also the longest of its kind, stretching 430 metres.

The spectacular six-metre wide platform spans two cliffs in Zhangjiajie, a breathtaking national park located in the country's Hunan province.

Designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan, it dwarfs America's Grand Canyon Skywalk, which is 21 metres long and 219 metres above ground.

The skywalk will also offer the world's highest bungee jump

It takes the title of world's highest from Canada's Glacier Skywalk, which opened last year in Alberta, and is suspended at almost 300 metres.

Apparently, the bridge in Zhangjiajie - capable of holding up to 800 people at once - will also be used as a runway for fashion shows.

But if a stroll in the sky sounds a little tame, you could always brave the world's highest bungee jump, something else it will offer.

The bridge is due to open in July this year.

A designated tourist park, Zhangjiajie is said to have been the inspiration behind the planet Pandora in James Cameron's 2009 movie, Avatar

Are you brave enough to stand on it? New observation deck weighing 900 tonnes and hanging over a 2,350 foot cliff opens in China
    • The £3.7 million structure is the longest skywalk in the world beating one at the Grand Canyon by five metres
    • The cantilevered platform in Chongqing offers visitors a 720 degree view of the canyon below
    • Glass platforms and transparent barriers mean people get an unobstructed view of the natural beauty spot

    • It was a tall order for workman but they have successfully completed the latest tourist attraction in China expected to draw the crowds.

The new 'Skywalk' observation deck has opened to the public in Yunyang County, southwest China, and those with vertigo are advised to stay at home.

The cantilevered platform in Chongqing has a 720 degree view from a vantage point that stands nearly 4,000 feet above sea level.

Its incredible viewing area protrudes nearly 90ft from the cliff face at the Longgang scenic area - which is more than 16ft longer than a similar tourist attraction at the Grand Canyon in America.

Daredevils will be able to step out onto the transparent walkway to get a dizzying peak at the valley floor, a full 2,350 feet below them.

Work on the £3.7 million structure started in March last year with builders facing a terrifying trip to work each day. It is now open to anyone who dares...

Bottom up: The view directly below the skywalk shows how thick and sturdy the 900-tonne engineering feat has to be to support itself

Clifftop views: The blue sky can be seen through the transparent panels of the new £3.7 million tourist attraction opening in China

Long way down: The beautiful blue waters of the river can be seen a full 718 metres below the viewing deck

If I were the designer, I wouldn't pave the whole road glass. I would pave glass and timber alternately, it looks true mingled with shadowy, it feel both dangerous and surefooted, bright and hidden.
