Brunei and Malaysia agreed Monday that ASEAN will hold a special summit in Jakarta to address the Myanmar situation, as harsh crackdowns on anti-coup protesters continue in the member country. Leaders of Brunei and Malaysia said the meeting will be held at the ASEAN secretariat in the capital of Indonesia in their joint statement, without mentioning when the meeting will take place.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, which currently serves as chair of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin voiced concerns over Myanmar in the joint statement released after their meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan on Monday, Kyodo News reported Monday.

The two leaders expressed "serious concern on the ongoing crisis in Myanmar and the rising number of fatalities" and urged all parties to exercise restraint and seek a peaceful solution, according to the statement. In the statement, however, the leaders did not mention the Myanmar military that seized power in a Feb. 1 coup and has resorted to deadly force against peaceful protesters.

The ASEAN meeting was first proposed by Indonesian President Joko Widodo in March, as the country has led efforts within ASEAN to seek a peaceful solution to the Myanmar crisis. Muhyiddin visited Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in Brunei in the two neighboring countries' annual meeting where they also discussed strengthening economic and social cooperation.

Since the Myanmar military ousted democratically-elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi's government in the coup, over 500 people have been killed, according to a rights group monitoring the violence in the country. ASEAN is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, grouping Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Reuters meanwhile reported that In a joint statement with Malaysia, Brunei said both countries have asked their ministers and senior officials to undertake “necessary preparations for the meeting that will be held at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia.”

The statement followed a meeting between Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah on Monday. “Both leaders agreed for ASEAN leaders to meet to discuss the ongoing developments in Myanmar,” they said. They did not say when the meeting would be held.

He he they dont like ASEAN members approaching China and Russia despite it is the most effective way to bring weight on the ASEAN summit.

New development here on Myanmar, maybe a good idea to invite the pro democracy leader into ASEAN meeting.

What I can say the meeting should be well prepared, and also dont need to be in rush, this Myanmar crisis will take quite long anyway.

Myanmar is now on the verge of civil war. White man are inciting their former clients, Kachin, Karen, Shan...etc, linking them with Suu Kyi group.

The optimal way forward is to put everything under Tatmadaw control.

ASEAN should come out in strong support for peace and stability.

Don't think the two sides are ready to negotiate yet. At least not in good faith. Watch out for major escalations in the coming days as both sides look to strengthen their positions. Normally negotiated settlements only happen after one party gets their asses kicked.

So far Wa still in peace. The Barmese got to thank China for that. But instead they hate China for supporting Tatmadaw (not true).

That map is kind of strange. I thought Wa controls Muse opposite of Ruli. In any case, Wa has a standing army of 40k with 60k reserves so no one will mess with them. Wa area is stable. There's mobile and internet because they use Chinese services and the economy is working because they use RMB. Don't think Wa will take sides in this conflict.

Western media cursed Wa from being peaceful.

And most Myanmar support west. Obviously they probably are too stupid that they want a civil war.

The “strongly silent” EAOs include the United Wa State Army (UWSA), the nation’s largest armed militia which is firmly under the leash of the Chinese and unlikely to play any part in the conflict. That’s crucial considering the UWSA’s role in supplying other EAOs with arms often procured from China.

The resistance of the Karen and Kachin, and the burden being borne by multiethnic communities in those areas as growing numbers seek shelter along the borderlands, should serve as a rebuke to the cynical indifference of other EAOs who have long espoused their opposition to Tatmadaw rule.

At a time that calls for clearly worded and demonstrated sentiments and positions – both in actions and words – some EAOs have instead sought accommodation with the Tatmadaw, which should be seen clearly for what it is: collaboration with the enemy.

They did have negotiated when Indonesian foreign minister met both of them in Thailand. The meeting will be held next Saturday in Jakarta and Myanmar junta leader will attend

Here the two sides (Military Junta and ousted Myanmar leader) meet with Indonesian foreign minister in Thailand. It was about 1 month ago.

Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah is the last sultan and the only sultan in the world. Also Brunei is the only remaining sultanate? This is also the longest surviving sultanate it has existed since the 12-century with the same house ruling it.. Talk about longevity.. It would be like if the Ottoman empire, Mamluki Sultanate, Abbasid, Delhi sultanate, Al-andalus, Ming Dynasty, Yuan Dynasty, etc etc still existed
