    Hi folks

I was wondering if any of you guys are into wargames? They might not have the "eye-candy" some of their so called "RTS'(real time strategy...usually a misnomer...as they are usually tactical level)cousins but have a very high level of realism.

    some wargames I love are

#Steel panthers world at war (is absolutly free, and if one looks past the dated graphics....is very detailed and authentic!)

Here is the link for the download.
Steel Panthers - World at War ! - Matrix Games

    # Hearts of iron 3
(probably the best wargame ive played till date)

Hearts of Iron 3 is set in ww2 era(even though there are mods which allow us to play on different time periods/settings) and is truly global in scope.

Both games have multiplayer option. Steel panthers world at war even has a play by email option; which comes in very handy, especially when people do not have a set time to get online.

If you guys share a similar interest and/or play/want to play these games do count me in as a multiplayer opponent:D . We can have friendly matches and the games are super fun!...way more than the silly games that have glitzy graphics but have no good features yet claim to be RTS's

ps: IF you like Command and comquer type of games you might not like these realistic ones.

    That's cool.:)
However I meant Strategy-type games when I meant wargames.

Have you tried the Europa Universalis series? Am currently playing EU II. Deals with period from 1419 to 1820. You can play a massive number of countries including the usual big countries like UK, France, Ottoman Empire etc. + less famous countries like Incas, Delhi Sultunate, Korea.

If you are a history fan then this is definitely a game for you. You have these random historical events all the time like minority rebellions (am playing Ottomans right now and keep having "Celali Shia Uprisings supported by Persia" all the time. So i checked it up on Wikipedia, and hey its true, there were numerous Celali Uprisings in Eastern Anatolia during the 1500 and 1600s).

In South Asia you also have a choice of lot of countries to play. The ones i can remember right now spanning the total time frame are : Mysore, Vijaynagar, Mahrattas, Orissa, Bengal, Arakan, Malwa, Rajput, Delhi Sultunate, Mughal Empire, Punjab, Gujarat, Balochistan and Afghanistan. So far played as Mughal Empire only and i can assure you its pretty freakin hard to survive, in that sense the game is realistic, As the Mughal Empire your not supposed to survive, keep having rebellions non stop and Persia was a prick in the west :P

Yes, Ive played EU 2, 3. They are really good games!. However I prefer the total war series to the EU series, mostly due to the excellent battles in the Total War series. Having said that, both series are awesome. The TW series also has the historical events, like in EU

The recent Empire total war has a lot of Indian kingdoms which you could play as.The Marathas are included as one of the major 12 factions of the game.Later on you can choose from other kingdoms as well, such as the Mughals, the Mysore maharajah and so on. Unlike most other games, the South Asian factions are given equal importance(compared to their western counterparts) in the Empire total war.

    Here is the factions list
    Empire: Total War | Factions

The upcoming game in the Total War series, Shogun 2 Total war simply blows my mind. lol sadly my pc might not be able to handle it

    Shogun 2

Btw the Hearts of iron series is produced by the same company that produced EU; paradox interactive. I liked the hearts of iron 3 because it simulates a lot of real-life considerations..such as supply lines...infrastructure to move supplies to the front lines and stuff...the coolest thing about this game is that an enemy could have an army with a million men...but if his supply lines are cut/constricted; his army will collapse under its own weight when his reserves run out. Its fascinating to replay the same famous ww2 battles...or even chart your own path to victory.

The wargaming areas do have both strategy and tactical games.
Good ones may not have lots of eye candy.
Yes there are some free ones about.

I'm going through you thread right now. It has a lot of info.
I used to be a lurker in Spwaw depot till a few years ago, and as you mentioned in that other thread of yours; the spwaw enhanced mod is truly awesome :)

I used to play PBEM on spwaw enhanced, but i guess it kinda petered out when life got busy.lol. Have you tried hoi3/hoi3 semper fi?? it hsa a lot of abstraction, but we can micro if desired.

    Simply, no.
I only deal with games I have had development design input. Beyond that I don't have time to play. Though I do admit I have not played any for a long time.

I've played every type of game there is. And I still love the original Age of Empires Rise of Rome the most.

I've played C&C, Civ series, StarCraft series, World in Conflict, Warcraft, Grand Ages, Anno series, Rise of Nations, AoM, Company of Heroes, and what not.

The most sophisticated, beautiful looking, and most detailed, lengthy RTS is Anno 1404. Amazing game, need 30+ hours of gameplay to saturate the game, a SINGLE game. That's how long it is. But its beautiful

AoE original, were beautiful, though not great AI, but very well crafted, and amazing units.

Civ series is also great, but gets boring midway.
