Antony heads to Vietnam for Asean defence ministers' meet

As part of India's long-standing `Look East' policy, defence minister A K Antony is headed for a four-day visit to Vietnam to attend the Asean defence ministers-plus meet beginning on Sunday.

The Hanoi meet, to discuss regional security issues, will include eight countries -- Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia and US -- apart from the 10 Asean countries.

"During the fourth Asean defence ministers' meet last May, it was decided to set up the Asean-plus forum. We view our participation in the deliberations as an aspect of our Look East policy and the larger objective of our integration with the region," said an official.

"On the sidelines, Antony will also have bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other countries. It will also be an opportunity for a series of meetings with Vietnamese defence minister General Phung Quang Thanh and other Vietnamese leaders for discussion on issues of mutual interest," he added.
