Afghanistan summons Pakistani envoy over ‘diplomats’ arrest’
    By Tahir Khan
    Published: March 1, 2015

ISLAMABAD: Afghanistan on Sunday summoned Pakistan’s ambassador to the Foreign Ministry over the ‘arrest and harassment’ of four Afghan diplomats in Peshawar by the Pakistani police on Thursday.

“Pakistan’s Ambassador to Kabul Sayed Abrar Hussain was called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Afghanistan in connection with the arrest and harassment of four of the Afghan Consulate General diplomats in Peshawar by the Pakistani police,” the Afghan Foreign Ministry said.

The protest came amid efforts by Pakistan to encourage the Afghan Taliban to join the intra-Afghan peace talks.

Terming the arrest of Afghan diplomats in Peshawar a ‘blatant violation of the principle of diplomatic relations’, Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai lodged strong protest with Pakistani envoy, said a statement issued by the Afghan foreign ministry.

Peshawar Police confirmed that four diplomats were among scores of Afghan nationals, who were detained by the police at the University Town Peshawar and its surrounding areas on Thursday.

However, according to Afghan sources in Pakistan the police had freed the Afghan consulate officials within an hour their arrest.

“Karzai asked the Pakistani ambassador to convey the strong protest and concerns of Afghanistan with his country and urge pakistani authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident,” the Afghan foreign ministry said.

The Afghan deputy foreign minister added that the cooperation and relations between the two countries has entered a new phase and it should not be strained by such acts.

Afghan ambassador to Pakistan Janan Mosazai had also rushed to the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad and raised the issue with Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry, sources told The Express Tribune.

Moreover, expressing concerns over “harassment of the Afghan refugees by the police in the Pakistan,” Karzai said that there is an urgent need to halt the process of forced expulsion until the Afghan high-ranking delegation visits Pakistan to consult regarding the return of Afghan refugees.

The Pakistani envoy reassured the Afghan authorities that he would “take up the issue to his country’s authorities to take necessary measures,” the statement further added.

It was a simple mistake, and they were released within an hour. Why make a big deal out of a simple mistake?

Anyway, Afghan refugees should either be repatriated, or given a chance to gain citizenship. Pakistan also needs to bring back stranded Pakistanis in BD. Refugee and immigration issues in Pakistan are a mess.

That simple mistakes cost Diplomatic Uproars. I think Pakistani Police needs to be provided a knowledge of how to deal with Diplomats because such incident cost a great deal of Damage on all the work at COAS Raheel Sharif had been doing since few months.

I just hope that Pakistan is not using the issue of refugee as a political bargaining chip, and it must respect diplomatic norms because this a very serious matter. A high level delegation is visiting Pakistan to discuss a plan for repatriation of the refugees as it is a matter that concerns the Afghan government the most. Unlawful harassment is not the way forward and can only create unnecessary negative feeling. There should be a government to government and third party such as UNHCR etc. plan and commitment to deal with this.

diplomats are not allowed to roam around without notification anyway

i believe those afghans who were born here and are ready to renounce their afghan citizen ship should be allowed to stay. stranded pakistani should be allowed to come back if they choose so and bengalis should be deported if they were not born here otherwise given citizenship

Unless they were up to some very nefarious activity - the foreign ministry should have gotten involved much earlier. If they are diplomats then they enjoy immunity. It's unlawful to detain them. We would expect the same for Pakistani diplomats in Afghanistan.

So either there was a mis-understanding and a mistake from our side, or the police/intelligence were 100% certain that they were engaged in 'non-diplomatic' undesirable activities

    Beshak.....

No diplomat should be arrested like that. If arrested, the protest should be lodged.

Most likely Afghan diplomats were hiring angry Afghans, for future terror activities in Pakistan.
Pakistan released them without interrogation.... just with a simple call from Mr. Sayed Abrrar Hussain?

Terrorist recruitment is Pakistani monopoly and just reserved for Pakistanis, Afghan diplomats would certainly not engage in it rest assured. Pakistani embassy other than consulate work is the most disengaged in Kabul and such acts would not augur well for expansion of relations and movement of Pakistani diplomats, business and other people.

Before making any complains its Afghan people whos attitude has cause that because if there were no Anti Pakistan sentiment in Afghanistan then their wont be repatriation now. What do you expect Pakistanis to do at one point you Afghans say lot of bad things about Pakistan at the other you also expect us to take a good care of your Countrymen in Pakistan. Things doesnt work like that if Afghans keep Hating Pakistan then their would be a reaction from Pakistan as well and its not Pakistanis who would suffer in the end instead its Afghans who would suffer. Afghans should have Thought about that before Making Hateful Remarks against Pakistan and trying to use Proxies to destabilize Pakistan and becoming a part of Indian Pakistan Encirclement Schemes that their would be consequences. Now our Patience has ran out because no country would bear the Burden of people who actually Hate them you are little late in this regards and what is done is done.

If Afghans wont be able to give our Diplomats Security then Pakistan will call them back and their goes your Govt.'s negotiation with Taliban or Chinese Investment. India is already Running away from Afghanistan even from their own ambitious Chabahar Port Project as well and USA is already to busy so Afghans are left with Pakistan only and if they wants to get rid of that as well then no problem from Pakistan because in the end its Afghanistan which would suffer instead of Pakistan so its better to keep things in check along with Attitudes towards neighbors because now Afghanistan has run out of its leverages which Afghans were enjoying for last 13 years.

It was a mistake, the police probably didn't realize they were diplomats. Remember, it was only 1 hour before they were released, this shows that they realized their mistake and released the diplomats.

What diplomatic uproar? The Afghans acknowledged that the diplomats were released with an hour. The Afghans protested, as they should, and Pakistan acknowledged it's mistake. By this time next week, things will go back to normal.

That is highly not possible. Every embassy is guarded by x numbers of ISI agents :) who have complete info about the diplomats and also follow them. More over Police also knows that, doplomatic passport looks different in color or has Diplomatic written on it, with special permission mentioned inside.

Because it is a European country , Pakistan is forced to free the diplomats, even if they were on jasusi :)

I'm not even going to dignify this with a proper response. I don't know whether you're serious, or you're joking.

I am serious and not joking. Ask any diplomatic community If you are in touch with. Don't know who made you a think tank.
