MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Eight districts in northern Faryab province are at risk of falling into the hands of Taliban insurgents who recently captured a highway police post and caused casualties to eight police, a public representative said on Saturday.

Sayed Abdul Baqi, a provincial council member, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the security situation in Faryab was critical as compared to other provinces.

“Eight districts including Kohistan, Garziwan, Balcheragh, Almar, Ghormach, Khwajah Sabzposh, Sherin Tagab and Dawlatabad face collapse,” he said.

He said security personnel in these districts were inadequate as half of them were said to be ghost force.

A resident of Qaisar districts, Abdul Baqi, said militants held a highway police post after a clash in Nahrain area on Friday night, killing four and wounding as many police.

Faryab police chief refused to comment about the fall of the police post and casualties. But those wounded in the incident said that the four slain policemen included a commander.

Khair Mohammad, one of the wounded policemen, said around 300 Taliban fighters stormed their post firing rockets and machineguns last night. He said he lost four colleagues including commander, Hayatullah, to the clash.

Mohammad Daud, another policeman who survived the attack, said that two of their colleagues including the post commander were killed with night vision rifles.

Another two policemen were killed and four others wounded as the gun battle went on until troops from a nearby Afghan National Army (ANA) base arrived and pushed the insurgents back, he said.

He added all the policemen would have been killed if the ANA troops had not supported them.

during the last 2 weeks more soldiers were killed or surrendered to Taliban than the number in the first 6 months of previous year.
Last year 36000 afghan forces were either injured or killed and can't serve any more. This year it looks like the figure will cross 50000 very easily. Afghanistan will lose 1/3 of its forces in 2 years.
