300 Pakistani students stranded in Bangladesh cry out for help

IFTIKHAR A. KHAN

ISLAMABAD: For over 300 Pakistani students studying in Bangladesh under the Saarc quota scholarship programme, life these days seems to be a never-ending nightmare.

“Earlier, I was residing in a hostel in Rajshahi and after my fellow students from India, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka were evacuated by their respective countries, I was shifted to a hostel in Dhaka,” said medical student Rija Hameed while talking to Dawn.

Most male and female students said limited access to food amid a lockdown in the country coupled with Bangladesh’s fragile healthcare system was making them nervous. “For days on end, we have been subsisting either on bread and jam or just biscuits,” said Rija.

Bangladesh has reported 218 confirmed coronavirus cases, with 20 deaths, so far, and there are fears it could spread rapidly throughout the densely-populated country, whose weak healthcare systems risk quickly becoming overwhelmed, according to Reuters.

Informed sources told Dawn that Prime Minister’s Public Affairs and Grievances Wing has forwarded to the foreign secretary an application of the father of a Pakistani student in Bangladesh seeking early action in order to evacuate them as soon as possible.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Aisha Farooqui, when contacted for comments, said she could do so once she gets a report on the situation from the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, and the vast majority survive. But for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can be more severe, even causing pneumonia or death.

I did not know that Pakistani students go to Bangladesh for studies.
Bangladesh has better education facility compared to Pakistan. So Pakistanis come here for study. Although the nationality 'Pakistani' has a lot of problem with Bangladeshi sentiment but they are treated as guests. They keep themselves within their community most of the time and Bangladeshis don't discuss liberation war with them because Pakistanis view Bangladesh creation was a 'conspiracy' of India but for Bangladeshis it is national identity. So a Pakistani view and Bangladeshi view never match together. They also talk about religious matter most of the time. It gets obnoxious. So they keep themselves within their community.

The reason Pakistan has 23 universities in QS Asia ranking of top 300 universities and Bangladesh has only 6 universities in the rank.

Pakistanis go to just about any place in the world to pursue a career...many reasons for it. Lack of seats in medical colleges, engineering too. Grades and financial assistance and scholarships...

That guy you're replying to is a pro Indian, possible false flagger who regularly posts provocative bullshit to incite fighting between Pakistani & BDeshi posters.Resident Uncle Tom of BD subsection,so to speak. He has been banned many times because of this too.
Don't bother taking him seriously.
Pakistan's education system is far ahead of us.Ours is a mess.

Pakistan has much more universities in world rankings. Bangladesh has none , so I am surprised what are they doing in BD.
Pakistan don't have enough facilities. Many females take the spots on high profile medical colleges and rich people pay private universities leaving no room for many male middle class and poor class students.

These students find the cheapest option nearby in a similar muslim environment. Hardly any facility in middle east, Afghanistan has none, many goes to China but it is little expensive and they have limited food options, India is mostly no go, leaving Bangladesh as the most favorable option due to similar climate, halal food, islamic cultural environment, not too far from home.

Out of all renowned institutes in pak and across Asia, these students could only manage to find Bangladesh knowing fully well that its the scaled down version of India and they can get victimized for being Pakistanis?

300 students is a miniscule number. Do you have ANY evidence that conclusively proves that bangladesh has a better education system than Pakistan?

Why not send a PIA Boing 777 to pick them up.

So says the person who belongs to the race and nation that has the highest number of severely malnourished and extreme poor in the world.................:azn::

BD is quite good for medicine and students from all over S Asia, apart from India go there to study.
A lot of Indian students also get admitted in Bangladesh. Specially in Medical colleges. Bangladesh is perhaps the most popular destination for students from Indian administrated Kashmir. Every year, hundreds of Kashmiri students get admitted. Students from other parts of India also get admitted in Medical colleges.

Relax, no need to feel ashamed. You should not make it a national prestige issue. Even many American students study in China despite America being top at university ranking.

Three hundred is just the number who want to return but got stranded. Many more returned earlier or do not wish to leave at this times.
