    ISLAMABAD:

The draft business plan for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has entered its final phase of completion.

Under the plan, which aims to take the airline back to the glory of decades past, the number of aircraft available will be increased from 32 to 50 in the next five years.

In addition, the business plan also proposes recommendations and strategies for controlling financial losses, including the closure of loss-making routes and the revival of routes seen as potentially profitable.

Once finalised, the draft plan for the national airline will be presented before the federal cabinet for approval.

According to sources, the plan also proposes cuts in PIA’s operational expenses to the tune of Rs 2.77 billion in annual expenditure, with further cuts planned over the next five years.

According to the sources, within PIA, the plan also includes recommendations for increasing the number of routes flown by the national airline in line with the open sky policy, while a proposal to reduce the fees charged by the Civil Aviation Authority and make those payments in Pakistani rupees rather than the US dollars has been made.

CAA charges of the country are relatively higher than other airports around the world, the sources said, adding that charges for a Boeing 777 at Islamabad Airport are $5,000 per landing, while charges for an Airbus A320 are up to $1,155.

At Lahore Airport, CAA landing charges for an A320 are $870 while a 777 is charged at $3,348 per landing. In Karachi, 777s landings cost $3,074, while A320 incurs charges of $696 per landing.

These charges, sources said, are higher than the landing charges in Dubai, Delhi, Kuala Lumpur, and Beijing.

The sources further said PIA has to face Rs 3,251 in FBR taxes for local flights and Rs 8,960 for international flights. The plan also proposes increasing the fleet of airplanes from 32 to 50 in the next five years. The new airplanes, it is proposed, will be procured on the lease.

The plan also proposes that six grounded planes should be made usable after being overhauled and maintenance. These include two 777s, two ATRs, and two A320s.

The business plan documents also show that the overall deficit faced by PIA stands at Rs 414 billion including Rs 247.7 billion in loans and Rs 114.7 billion in outstanding payments.

The national airline is spending over Rs 4 billion monthly interest expenses alone. According to sources, the plan also proposes rationalisation of PIA’s booking offices and shifting of its oil depot from Karachi to Islamabad.

What they really need to work on is service. Their service is seriously lacking and simply not good enough compared to other airliners.

Do not buy Boeing jets, 787 max, severe abnormal behaviour and security concerns regarding the American made commercial airliners.

My parents traveled on PIA last week, and they said it was fantastic journey back home and 2 hot meals were provided in overnight flight, they were extremely excited to be making the trip home

Fantastic Tea/Coffee and cake served for passengers beside the main meals

My father did too, he has a Qatar airways membership but prefers PIA. He soad it has a complete different atmosphere. The only issue he found was the lack of digital entertainment, otherwise he was fine with everything else.

The best solution would be to have flights to all airports in pakistan and then just long haul flights.

Improve the entertainment and keep everything clean. PIA would become very competitive.

The original order is for 5, 777 aircrafts, but Boeing wanted PIA to switch it to the 787. PIA refused and stated that the technology in the 787 was not mature enough. So there are still 5, 777 being built for the airlines. 6 are being repaired and fit for service. I am not aware of the other 7 aircrafts. My guess would be new Airbus planes.

Shame our National Airline PIA stopped flying to the States and JFK in 2017 service was so bad most Pakistanis prefer traveling on the Gulf Carriers one of my friends dad in HS lost his job at JFK since PIA ended operations they were talks to codeshare with Turkish Airlines in like 2012 and 2013 have PIA fly to Istanbul then Turkish would fly to JFK and I am pissed the Gangoos have more options to fly to their homeland Jet Airways,Air India and the other Indian carriers fly to all area airports here in NY both JFK and Newark Liberty and worse part they fly to all major cities and airports here DFW,Houston-Bush, O-Hare and SFO more tourism dollars for Gangoo sigh @Ahmet Pasha @Indus Pakistan @Pan-Islamic-Pakistan @Pakhtoon yum

It wasnt PIA's choice, they were banned my the states. No direct flights from pakistan can land in the US. Which is extremely stupid but we had a spineless government at the time. Someone should bring this up to the new government.

That was in the 2000s when they got the Boeing 777 which had the capibilty of flying non-stop yeah BS post 9/11 policies but the reason why they left the States was money I know this I know many folks working at JFK and PIA folks they were losing out to Gulf Carriers

also I hated landing Manchester,UK as like any Pakistani living here

It needs rebranding, the name 'PIA' has badly tarnished.
