Punjab and the British Indian Army

On the Sikh vs Muslim Jat demographics: Most Sikh Jats were settled agricultural land owners, which the British prized as the ideal recruit. Most Muslim Jats were pastoralists, which was seen as a lifestyle that produced "lesser" soldiers. Also, Sikhs generally considered military service to...

Punjab and the British Indian Army

The Pashtuns and Balochis are from Punjab, not NWFP or Baluchistan. Many of them had ancestors that settled in the region well before the British arrived, and were fluent in Punjabi. I don't have a full tribal breakdowns for WW2 Punjabis, though I suspect you'd see a lot more "non-martial"...

Punjab and the British Indian Army

Some confusion here. Most of these soldiers were Hindustani Rajput Muslims from Haryana. Haryana as you may know was part of British Punjab, but only some of its major tribes were shared with actual Punjab, while many were extensions of populations found in Uttar Pradesh. The Muslim Rajputs of...

I was raised in Colorado but live in Arizona now. I've lived all over the South and Mountain West though (Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, even some times in Texas).

The Aryans were ‘Invasive’ to South Asia

There's no debate in the academic community that the IVC people did not speak Sanskrit. Indo Aryan languages come from the Indo Aryans, who originated on the Eurasian Steppe, then spread their languages West into Europe, and South to Iran and India. This is 99.99% certain.

The Aryans were ‘Invasive’ to South Asia

I wrote a piece on the nature of the Aryan Migration into India during the early Vedic Period. Its a history I believe all Pakistanis should be aware of. Enjoy!

Hindu Persecution of Buddhists in Pre-Islamic India

Buddhism has been considered separate from Hinduism almost as soon as it coherently began to form. Though this view was only held by the upper-castes (Brahmins and Kshatriyas mostly), while the common people were always much less orthodox and okay with being syncretic between different faiths...

Hindu Persecution of Buddhists in Pre-Islamic India

Hey everyone, I wrote a lengthy article on the persecution of Buddhists by Hindus in pre-Islamic India, directly from early Buddhist and Hindu sources. This piece was prompted by seeing many people cite early accounts of Muslim violence against Hindus, and using these accounts to "prove" the...

Back with another genetic PCA plot using Gedmatch Harappa data, this time with additional samples from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Iran, to see how South Asian samples flow into neighboring ethnic groups. Linking full post below with additional info and discussion on the plot!

India on the Eve of British Conquest

If you have any primary sources I'd be interested, but you are really mixing up your sequence of events here. The border agreed upon by Tibet/Britain in the early 20th century is not a reflection of who controlled AP in 1764. Same regarding this alleged Ahom alliance which took place much...

India on the Eve of British Conquest

Arunachal was referred to as "Lower Tibet" and considered part of the Qing Empire's Tibet region before the arrival of the British. The Ahom's did not exercise control over that region during this period, from what I've read.

India on the Eve of British Conquest

In 1764 India was ripe for the picking. The Mughal Empire, which had ruled much of the region for the past two centuries, had shattered. The various smaller states that arose in its place were relatively weak, both militarily and economically. Recent advances in artillery and infantry...

Indo Aryan Languages of South Asia

Was just skimming this thread and its devolved quite a bit. A few points. In Vedic literature (especially the Rig Veda) Aryans distinguish themselves from non-Aryans by using appeals to both culture and race. So non-Aryans (basically the native Indians) are described as Mlecchas both due to...

Indo Aryan Languages of South Asia

Ethnically Pakistani (half Punjabi, half Muhajir), born and raised in America. I don't know what "brand India" is, if I go back and forth between using India or South-Asia its probably random.
