BEIJING: China's military budget will increase by 17.8 percent in 2007, a senior official said Sunday, one day before Chinese lawmakers start their annual parliamentary session.
"In recent years, China has gradually been boosting its military expenditures," said Jiang Enzhu, a spokesman for the National People's Congress, the Chinese legislature. "But the increases have been in order to make up for the weak basis of the nation's defense."
Jiang Enzhu said at a news conference on the eve of the annual meeting of China's legislature that military spending would hit 350.92 billion yuan (US$44.94 billion; euro34.14 billion) in 2007 _ an increase of 52.99 billion yuan (US$6.84 billion; euro5.19 billion) over last year.
Jiang said most of the money would be spent on boosting wages and living allowances for members of the 2.5 million-strong Peopleââ¬â¢s Liberation Army, and on upgrading armaments.
He said the military expenditures will account for 7.5 percent of total government expenditures in 2007, compared with 7.4 percent in 2006. "Overall, the proportion has been stable over the past few years," said Jiang.
