Muslims are Gujarat’s new outcastes: Survey

The 2002 communal riots not only drove Muslims into new ghettos all over the state, they also reduced them to the status of second-class citizens who do not seem to exist for the government. This is the finding of a city-based NGO, Janvikas, which conducted a survey on the status of the minority community in the state after the riots.

The survey has revealed that Muslims are the new outcastes who, more often than not, are denied basic facilities which are available to people of other communities. Not only that. It appears that this neglect of the community is officially sanctioned for the riot victims find no mention in government records as people who need help.

The neglect of the minority community is evident even in efforts to resettle them as little has been done to provide them access to government schemes, health facilities and loans.

About 16,000 Muslims displaced by the riots are still living in relief colonies that are denied even the most basic amenities.

The riots displaced more than 2 lakh people across the state.

These people remained displaced for almost two years after 2002. However, NGOs and Muslim relief organisations settled a total of 16087 people in 83 different relief colonies.“These are the people who cannot or dare not return to their original place of residence and have been living in shelters for the last 10 years,” said Vijay Parmar, CEO of Janvikas.

The 83 relief colonies that were built after the riots are almost all located in Muslim majority areas. Fifteen of them are situated in Ahmedabad and the support they receive from the state government is negligible.

"The government did next to nothing for creating awareness about social security schemes meant for Internally Displaced People (IDP)," said Khatunben, a resident of Citizen Nagar, a relief colony in Ahmedabad.

The houses in which the displaced people have been living since 2002 have not been formally transferred to their names.

There has also been a sharp decline in the earnings of almost every displaced individual. The survey has revealed that the average annual income of displaced Muslims in Ahmedabad has come down by 31% as compared to their income before the riots.

Amazing then that even after this so-called neglect of Muslims, they voted for Modi's party, the BJP, in the civic body elections which were held in the Muslim majority areas.

Baffling indeed!

Muslims and Hindu brothers should learn how to co exist each other in riot area..This story is just ridiculous...I feel after 10 year...rather than muslim...Modi is still outclassed and victimized in the indian politics by Indian media....

Whatever data shown by NGO should be taken with a teaspoon of salt.

Come in gujarat, the story is completely different..
I have my friend nawaz who is persuing MBBS and i have one friend sajjad who is persuing BBA, but i have also got one friend nazim who left his studies and working in garage..All of them shares the same family background but different will and destination..
If u will work hard no is going to stop u, and Namo will definetly recognise your determination...How can u forget the recent DIG of gujarat ???

i wish people of gujarat take this ngo seriously. but bingo, no ne does and modi is keep on coming to power. bette luc next time.

a few more years and majority of indians won't give a damn about their religion.
i.e,they may follow their religion ,but won't see themselves on the basis of religion.

its a growing trend in my place(and i am an upcoming deist-meaning i have no religion, only god)

Prosperity, education and urbanization is the cure to all social evils.

urbanization??-is it necessary?

i don't think so!

Urbanization is the easiest way to provide basic amenities to the population in an efficient manner. Also however hard we try, urbanization is a truth thats happening all over the world. China expects 80% of the population to live in cities by 2020(?) and are building new cities and massively developing their existing cities. India lags behind in this sector.

urbanization may help in improving living standards, but definitly its not the only way,and therefore isn't necessary.

Some people (with vested interests) just cant accept Modi ji and will try anything in the book, and outside it too, to malign him.

They should just realize that every false attack, calumny on Modi adds 100s of new supporters to him.

Bingo..first lets achieve that. Have you seen the living standards in many of our villages. Its pathetic to say the least. The villagers have no running water, power is scarce and no easy access to medical help. Urbanization can solve these problems.

My concept may not be to everyone's liking and not in line with the whole Gandhi's 'India's soul is in the villages' concept, but it works and currently India needs practical solutions. 60% of the Indian population makes their living from agriculture..we have to reduce that by at least half.
