Iran Warns against US Military Presence in Afghanistan, Lesson to India
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said the US is using the so-called war on terrorism as an excuse to guarantee its long-term presence in the war-torn country.
"Unfortunately, evidence indicates that the US intends to extend its military presence in Afghanistan in a bid to attain its trans-regional goals and eradication of terrorism has just been an excuse for its military presence in Afghanistan and the region," Salehi said addressing the Istanbul International conference on Afghanistan.
He pointed to the US efforts to establish permanent military bases in Afghanistan, and stated, "Legalizing foreign military bases in Afghanistan runs counter to Afghanistan's and the international community's position which focuses on peaceful solutions."
Salehi also said that such a move would also cause radicalism and terrorism to continue in the region.
Iran has repeatedly deplored possible plans for the establishment of permanent US military bases in Afghanistan, stressing that the bases would be a source of permanent insecurity from Iran's neighbor.
Rahim Mohammadi Yekta, the chief Iranian consul in Heart, told a press conference on Sunday that Iran opposes any form of foreign interference in Afghanistan.
The senior Iranian diplomat emphasized that foreign troops have been unsuccessful in establishing security in Afghanistan and, in fact, security has steadily decreased.
"These people with their 200,000 troops have failed to establish security," Mohammadi Yekta said. "How can they be expected to do so with a few military bases?"
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has tried to calm the concerns of his neighbors by saying any agreement signed with the US will be in "the political, economic and military interest of Afghanistan" and the precondition of any agreement would be "the establishment of peace and the provision of stability in Afghanistan."
