Yoga made compulsory for 10-lakh strong central forces | Zee News
Last Updated: Monday, June 29, 2015 - 21:28

New Delhi: The 10 lakh-strong paramilitary forces of the country have been asked by the Centre to include Yoga in their daily physical drills.

The Union Home Ministry has asked the forces to implement these directions on a "priority" and ensure Yoga is practised even at active duty areas like border posts and those in the Left Wing Extremism affected states of the country.

"Physical exercises are the part of daily routine of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles personnel in various field formations like battalions, Group Centres, border out posts etc. Keeping in view the importance Yoga has gained in recent time, it would be prudent to include it as part of daily physical exercise of the forces in various field establishments," a directive from the Home Ministry said.

The directives have been issued to the six CAPFs like Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force, Sashastra Seema Bal, National Security Guard and the Assam Rifles which work under the command of the Union Home Ministry.

The order has asked the Directors General (DsG) of the forces to issue appropriate instructions to their field formations spread across the country and also submit an action taken report in this regard.

"Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition and it is the responsibility of everyone to preserve it by adopting it as a part of daily activity. Accordingly, it would be appropriate to incorporate Yoga as part of daily routine of force personnel," the order said.

While the force headquarters are still formulating an action plan to start these exercises in a full-fledged manner, a plan of utilising off-duty personnel for the same has been chalked out initially.

"In active duty areas, the reserve or off-duty troops and officers would be asked to perform Yoga. This will be done in rotation in such areas where the facilities are not so much in abundance," a senior official said.

They said various 'asanas' would be done at certain areas in a case-to-case basis. Locations where there are thin levels of oxygen, there can be a relaxation in doing breathing exercises.

While Yoga is an important component of the introductory and refresher training courses of these forces, it is not conducted daily in active-duty and hard areas as troops at these locations are instructed to carry out fast physical exercises keeping in mind the task at hand.

The world celebrated the first International Yoga Day on June 21 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi took up a proposal for the same during his first address to the UN General Assembly in September last year.

Two world records were also set by India on the same day by having 35,985 participants performing 'asanas' at one venue and as many as 84 nationalities joining in the official observation of the day at Rajpath.

Stupid move.

What the paramilitary and military needs is better training facilities, better living conditions, better training and better weapons. The stress in paramilitary arises because of the fear that the enemy outguns them. And the fear is true. INSAS is no match for AK-47 and will always be out gunned.

Give the soldiers better training, give them better weapons, modern communication sets, modern body armor and provide them with better intelligence. The morale will already be boosted and the maoists will be beaten back.

US, NATO, Russia do not follow yoga but they have the most feared and respected military on earth.

Well how about reviewing the PT test requirements as well?

They look pretty abysmal in some areas.

Providing any kind of activities like yoga are great, but there are more urgent issues

1 million Paramilitary forces will get all the latest weapons from communication sets to body armors, helicopters and drones etc.

Then it is better to focus on that instead of yoga.

And why not teach some form of martial arts instead of yoga? It will help in self-defense in combat, it builds stamina and fitness, it improves personal discipline, it increases mental strength and confidence.

Yoga is part of Indian Army and now the Indian paramilitary will even go through the same process.

Compulsory issue maybe objected by someone or not I don't know but Paramilitary forces faces many time dangerous &difficult situation compared to army but get not slice of facilities compared to army.
They need better weapon, clothing, support along with Yoga and Pranayam to tackle their physical and mental stress.
One Former CRPF DGP commented that if India purchase 1 less Rafale jet that amount would be enough for CRPF to purchase Odomos for 1 year to protect themselves from mosquitoes which didn't get.

It was way back in October 2009 that the defence acquisitions council had cleared the acquisition of 1,86,138 such bullet-poof jackets since the Army was short of that number from its authorized holding of 3,53,765 jackets.

Given the operational urgency, defence minister Manohar Parrikar had last year announced the emergency procurement of 50,000 new jackets. But they, too, are yet to materialize. "The selection/procurement process is underway after the government sanction ... It will take at least another six months," said a defence ministry source on Monday.

The bigger case for 1.86 lakh jackets is still at the trial evaluation stage, with six vendors locked in competition. Each jacket's estimated cost was put at around Rs 50,000 when the project was approved, making it a total of around Rs 930 crore. All these jackets were to be inducted by 2012, with another 1.67 lakh jackets to be ordered in the second round.

The modular jackets are meant to provide "graded levels of protection" depending on the mission to be undertaken. The jacket would weigh less than 4 kg — with a trauma pad with all-around soft armour plate including front, sides, back, collar and neck — for low-risk/threat missions.

The jacket would weight 11.5 kg, with hard armour plates for front, rear, sides, upper arms, groin and throat, in turn, for high-risk missions. "The hard armour plates, in conjunction with the soft ones, are meant to withstand six rounds of 7.62mm x 39mm mild steel core ammunition fired from an AK-47 from 10 metres," said the Army.
