With 2-users a day, Pak’s ‘halal’ Facebook in dire need of cash

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's "halal" version of Facebook, launched nearly two years ago after authorities briefly banned the social networking website over blasphemous cartoons, is in dire financial straits and seeking donations to pay server hosting bills.

MillatFacebook sought donations to pay for its US-based servers in an email sent to its users on December 10.

However, the email was riddled with "factual errors and highly suspect claims" that cast doubts on the integrity of its owners, The Express Tribune reported.

The website still insists on calling itself "the only Facebook rival", ignoring the existence of social networking sites like Google Plus, and claims it is spending thousands of dollars for web hosting.

MillatFacebook sought donations to "help us towards our goal of keeping this Peaceful Social Network run forever and defeat blasphemer Facebook".

"As you can imagine, cost of running a social network is never easy and very costly. Current month we are facing a shortfall of 581 USD in server payments. (We are paying 1000s of USD in server payments ourselves and now need your helping hand to meet this shortfall)," the email said.

According to websitetrafficspy.com, a leading source of internet traffic information, MillatFacebook attracts an average of two users a day.

Experts believe that with such low traffic, it would be unlikely that MillatFacebook would need to buy expensive web hosting facilities.

The website's Chief Operating Officer Umar Zaheer Meer acknowledged that the fundraising drive was not going well.

He claimed donors were reluctant to give money via credit cards owing to "cyber laws".

Meer claimed MillatFacebook had over 476,000 members but did not specify how many are active.

When it was launched in May 2010, MillatFacebook had claimed it would not have any paid advertising. However, it now has advertisements.

In contrast, Facebook has over one billion active users, including more than eight million Pakistanis.

MillatFacebook was launched soon after the Lahore High Court banned Facebook over a competition for blasphemous cartoons of Prophet Mohammed.

Muhammad Azhar Siddique, who filed a petition that led to brief ban on Facebook, convinced Meer to start the website.

Soon after the launch of MillatFacebook, the High Court restored access to Facebook after authorities put in place measures to block webpages featuring the blasphemous caricatures.

Its probably because no body know about existence of millat Facebook :)

Its easy to make a website but its hard to do marketing and make strategy to attract the members from all over the world

Title is stupid..halal face book as if Facebook is some sort of meat lol

Nothing can compete with facebook , not even this halal or whatever :woot:

Didn't make the title myself it was reported as it is.. I posted it in members club because i found it funny as well..

our people are in the cheap imitation phase right now. Instead of having original thought and innovations they think they can make cheep knock offs of existing IP and be sucessfull.
There was also a "youtube.pk" website that is not owned by youtube
And I am sure there are many others.

We need innovation and original ideas, not cheep limitations.
So good riddance to bad rubbish.

i remember when milatfacebook came out in 2010, i signed up for it because i was going to pakistan and needed to connect with my friends (pretty much every other pakistani signed up for it because facebook was blocked for a month, no one cared about it once the government unblocked facebook)

I am hearing this for the first time..

Halal facebook..lol :p:
your media tries to make fun of anything pakistani, dont blame us, the name is millatfacebook, not halal facebook -_-

The problem I have is that it had "facebook" in it's name
That is just sad.
make up your own name, I am sure there are a billion good names in urdu they could have used.

But then again, our leaders can't even think of names for their parties.
Pakistan Muslim League Noon, Pakistan Muslim League Qauf, All Pakistan Muslim league
All cheep imitations of the All India Muslim League.
For the love of God make up your own name :hitwall:

Strange....I was thinking at least Pakistan and BD members in PDF should be the first members to use it and make it profitable than the owner's expectation...

why?
What innovation does it provide?
As far as I can see, the only thing it does is segregate Muslims from non-Muslims and that is never a good idea.
The people have spoken and they don't want to be segregated.

Got it...and i am ready to be wrong and i was really happy with your assessment about the site...But unfortunately, i have seen that some years back some people in this foroum are very much excited about it...

Halal facebook..lol :p:

yeh we too heard it for the first time that too from ToI :) since Times of India lost juice in Dehli Gang rape case hence it is using it empty head on finding attraction by adding such words. you know anyting related to anti-Islam gives ToI a good moronic raedership
