President Barack Obama is about to announce his new strategy for Afghanistan, but the success of whatever option he chooses will depend heavily on Pakistan acting to stop it's territory being used to attack Western forces next door. And that's bad news, because the demands of it's own domestic counter insurgency campaign doubts about the duration of US commitment in Afghanistan and looming political instability in Islamabad have left Pakistan in no hurry to help out.

Why the Pakistan Army Won't Fight Afghanistan's Taliban - TIME

The New York Times reported Monday that in the letter, Obama urged Zardari to rally his nation behind a joint campaign against militants who fight the Pakistani government and those who fight U.S. and allied troops in Afghanistan. Obama was also reported to have demanded more decisive action against al-Qaeda leaders hiding in Pakistan's tribal areas. In return, he reportedly offered a range of fresh incentives, "including enhanced intelligence sharing and military cooperation."
The problem, of course, is that Obama's letter may have gone to the wrong address. As a weak and unpopular President scarcely seen in public and now the object of growing vilification at home, Zardari is in no position to lead a popular movement against militancy, much less to redirect his army's focus.

Indeed Obama's letter went to the wrong address, it should've gone to Santa Clause if he wishes to have Pakistan Army engage the Afghanistan Taliban. Any such move by any Pakistani leader is akin to a national suicide. We barely got public support behind the armed forces to eliminate those who threaten Pakistan only, what makes anyone think that public will allow or agree on any such misadventure as the PA taking on Afghani taliban. It doesn't even matter how great of a leadership we would need. Forget Zardari I don't think even Mr. Jinnah would be able to get any public support for such war.

On a lighter note, maybe Obama should consider getting in touch with the Indian authorities sitting right over there, maybe they'll lend him a hand and dedicate their army fighting the taliban with NATO and American forces.

I guess more so now than ever before as they seek an escape route from Afghanistan.
On a different note, news was once circulating that India was willing to commit some 2000 troops into Afghanistan. Either the Americans didn't consider them capable or the Indians ultimately lost the appetite.

its their war... they started it... our strategic interests are different from the states.... it doesnt make any sense fighting this war for them ( in Afghan i mean )... unless the states doesnt stop giving us candy when we ask for bombers there is no point sending our troops in... pak should infact completely concentrate on getting rid of terrorists from pakistan and then seal our borders and try to reinvent governance in FATA.... thats the whole reason why these guys got into pakistan because we never bothered to control those areas
