Terror threats in Bangladesh have gone down in the face of stern actions adopted by the government, says Peter Lavoy, senior director at White House’s National Security Council on South Asia.

“We were worried at the emergence of militancy in Bangladesh. We are working with the government to curb it. We encouraged the authorities to take pragmatic actions against the threat.

Peter Lavoy also said Bangladesh has experienced less militant threats in recent months and that he hopes it will subside further.

He made the statements in reply to a query on the US concerns on militancy in Bangladesh during an interview with the Bangla Tribune, sister concern of the Dhaka Tribune.

The US government last week issued security warning for its citizens in Bangladesh over staying and travelling throughout the country.

Following the Holey Artisan attack, the US government shifted the family members of the staff employed at Dhaka embassy.

Yes this had to happen. Bangladesh is not really an ideal place for terrorism and given our homogeneous population, it will be very difficult to sustain such activities. Not to mention that our security forces have technically 3 policies - kill, kill and if that doesnt work, kill again. In case of 'arrest', these policies are implemented just after few days.

After all, every terrorist has friends who comes to save them from a prison van...

It is fact that our police (especially DMP) are one of the best-trained forces in the region.

Then you have the RAB.

And then you have the SWAT teams, probably the best equipped SWAT in the region.

Terrorists are basically outgunned.

Also - they have very little sympathy or support from the populace.

It is because we have 32 crore eyes. Unlike other countries it is very hard in Bangladesh to organize anything without raising suspicion.

The only reason terrorists in Bangladesh managed to launch a great attack is that The Government tried to link their initial activities with opponent Islamic parties instead of looking in the right place.

Don't say that. Our sub-continental buddies will get mad.

All true and all of the above deserve a lot of credit, including the new Counter terrorism Unit (CTU).

But, we also need to keep in mind, the terrorists in Pakistan and India are far better armed and trained. Extremist militancy is still an infant in this country. We need to keep working to ensure, it doesn't graduate to a higher level.
