With Japan’s young population dwindling, the country’s major companies have sent recruiters to Singapore to interview high-flying university graduates from elsewhere in Asia.
Tokyo-based recruitment firm Recruit Career recently arranged for seven companies to interview about 60 foreign students with a view to hiring the continent’s best and brightest.

It is unprecedented for Japanese companies to go to South-east Asia to hire fresh graduates from local universities to take them back to Japan. Until now, they have hired only foreign students who studied in Japan — and for positions at their subsidiaries overseas.

The move reflects both how Japanese companies are becoming more international in their outlook and how human resource departments are starting to cast a wider net as they face a shrinking pool of university graduates at home.

On a quiet Saturday morning last month at Singapore’s new downtown financial district, students gathered on the 39th floor of the swanky Marina Bay Financial Centre. The final-year undergraduates and recent graduates had been shortlisted in interviews conducted mostly through Skype and then flown to Singapore for two days of interviews. Their air tickets and hotel rooms were paid for.

Most tried to hide their nervousness as they fiddled with their laptops or their notes. Some were quiet and serious, while others chatted with friends as they sat on sofas while waiting their turn.

The candidates hailed from Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, India and Singapore. More than half could speak a fair amount of Japanese, as most of the companies expected. The recruiters included Panasonic, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking and Brother Industries.

Mr Masayasu “Mark” Yukioka, director of Panasonic’s Corporate Recruiting Centre, said it was his first time coming to Singapore to recruit Asian students. In the past, Panasonic recruited Asians mainly to work for its subsidiaries outside Japan. Foreign students in Japan, who had studied Japanese, were also hired in Japan to work in Panasonic’s subsidiaries in Asian countries.

“But today is different. I can say that it’s the opposite way. I would like to hire foreign nationals who can speak Japanese and invite them to Japan as Japanese company employees.”

Japan’s demographic problem is one of the main factors prompting companies to search for talent overseas. “The younger generation is now decreasing, so that we cannot expect very-high-level students in Japan only, so ... we have to seek the highly educated people from a worldwide pool.”

The geographical proximity with Japan also makes it easier to recruit students from the region, he said.

Mr Caniago Ardiansyah, an Indonesian in his early 20s who has studied Japanese literature, was applying for a sales job with a Japanese construction firm. “I had passed the JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) entry level test. This would give me a chance to get work in Japan. This is a big chance for me to make my dream come true to go to Japan,” he said.

“Japan will be a good strong platform for a global career because a lot of their companies are starting to look outward,” he said. KYODO

Lol we dont fine jobs in our country and you dont have people to give job to

My friend from Islamabad recently got invited to join Rakuten as a Developer, he is presently based in Tokyo.

Congratulations to your friend for getting into Rakuten ! Hope he enjoys his new life in Japan ! :)

Too many jobs available, not enough candidates ! And these are well paying jobs as in: Engineering, IT Analyst, Physician, Nurses, Teachers.

It is a sad thing. There goes the monolithic Japanese culture.

I have deep suspicion that immigration is elite evil plan to destroy cohesive society. Very few European peasants I met support migration and almost every case of migration cause trouble, unless migrants are East Asian.

Basically elites make things expensive to sterile the people and then accuse citizen do not want to breed. Then they flood the countries with alien so that the country will have trouble.

Btw, Sir, starting salary of a Developer / Software Engineer in Japan is around 4.2 - 5.0 million JPY. That's around ~ $36000 - $42,000 (US Dollars) per year. Not bad ! With time, it can go up to as much as 5.5-6 + million JPY...!

Don't worry, we're bringing in top talent to the country. We're looking at : 1) education, 2) ingenuity, 3) command of language, 4) background. With these high level professionals, we're not just giving them work visas, but eventually, they can qualify for residency and eventual Citizenship / Naturalization.

First world problems you know ?

Ontopic: Japan with it's closed culture would find it a bit challenging to assimilate diverse cultures. + chances of a lot of friction since these people don't value honesty as much as you japanese people do.

I have had some amazing Japanese experiences travelling in Japan and they are truly the world's most honest and down to earth people :)

East Asian, Southeast Asian and South Asians are very , very good candidates. In Japan, there are quite a number of Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and they assimilate very well. Btw, Pakistanis in Japan are known for good business instincts, many own very huge car sales businesses , and many are making a killing in selling 2nd hand Japanese cars and sell it to say ASEAN, Pakistan, India et al. Don't under-estimate South Asians and their savvy business sense --- and with productive minds like that --- that's what we need.

Look at any South Asians in Japan. They're either graduate students, teachers, college lecturers, in engineering or are in medicine / health field. These are model citizens.

Not refugees !

Dont believe what the government preach. Japanese culture is good and mass migration will destroy the bushido that makes you guys rich.

Foreigners do not have the idea of 忠孝仁义 unlike East Asian.

I do not know how you would you do when you preach "self sacrifice" to a group of caste-ist who are bent of shitting on others or to a group of islamo who want to bomb others.

I remember during Meiji era when Japanese killed a white man and white man call for punishment. The Daimiyo ask for volunteer and tenth if not hundreds volunteer to harakiri before white man.

You have better chance teaching this thing to Chinese and Koreans Nisei.

You ask hindus and islamo to do that?

I think that its a much needed aspect. As Japan continues to enhance its international reach, as it globalizes , she also needs to invite people to come to Japan and bring with them --- the wealth of knowledge that Japan should use to invigorate our own work force. For example, I'm in the Human Psychology field, and prior to my moving to the US, I did some work in Industrial Engineering research back home; some of my fellow researchers were doctoral students from India, Singapore, Saudi Arabia (yes! Saudis! lol), Persians, Germans etc. This is a trend throughout Japan's 7 top universities and the hundreds of universities, where the country is bringing in top talent from around the world. This is similar to the US' own H1B visas, which brings in top talent from around the world. In this regard, we should capitalize on this. Afterall, there is no shortage of jobs in Japan.... ;)

You have put it in a racist way but @Nihonjin1051 he does have a very valid point.

You can't be assimilating people from south asia since they have grown up in a third world with immense population pressure. There, it is a dog eat dog world. ( pardon If i sound racist here ).

They will never appreciate the benevolence of the japanese culture and destroy it.

Dude, you need to go look inside large Japanese corporations like Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ishikawajima Harima, Toyota Motor Corp, Hitachi Corp, Toshiba Corp, et al. There's a growing number of foreign specialists who are filling ranks in design, human resources, engineering et al. Its much needed. And by the way, look at Toyota ! Its the #1 auto maker in the world, and you should know the reason for that success --- Toyota has a rich diversity culture , imbued with Japanese traditional work culture. Whether we like it or not, we have to bring in top talent.

If an Indian, Pakistani, Indonesian can speak Japanese, understand Japanese culture, works hard, is team-oriented, loves Japan as any other, --- then I see them as Japanese as well.

Well, a true market place for free flow of jobs and labour eh ? Sounds like an american rhetoric

Anyway, you guys need to keep it slow. I love japanese culture. Would hurt me as much to see it shitted on ..

I like the US immigration system. Its averse to refugee entrance, but more open to educated professionals. That's the difference between US's immigration policy vs Western European immigration policy. Japan needs to do just that.

I understand your interest in Japanese culture and maintaining that identity. But think of it this way -- immigrants who come to Japan are usually alone, so that encourages them to marry into the local people. Within a generation, children are half Japanese, within 2 to 3 generations, their offspring will be indistinguishable from the overall population.

;)
