This is a thread which compiles various weapons other stuff that really helped us out.

Please input your suggestions too

1.Haubits FH77 a.k.a "The Bofors Gun"

155mm-bofors-howitzer-in-drass-sector-1999-trimmed-the-hindu.jpg

Popularly called the Bofors Gun ,this 155 mm howitzer was instrumental for the Indian Army in winning the Kargil War. 410 guns and support systems were purchased in 1986,which also kick started an infamous scandal.

According to pak journo Najam Sethi the "Big Indian Guns" (Bofors Gun) made the same effect in Kargil as the Stingers in Afghan war.

Pakistani intruders were confident that Indian Army will never be able to pound their positions with effect as they expected only mortar and light artillery. They were proven wrong when the Bofors began to pound them with its brutal 155mm rounds. That wasn't enough, the shoot and scoot ability of the bofors ,thanks to its auxilary power unit that allowed it to move at an speed of 5km/hr allowed it to shift posittions after each shot thus fooling enemy weapon locating radars.

The bofors gun helped us reduce many casualities and literally turned the course of the war.

2.An-12,AMX-13 combo

An-12

800px-Vega_Air_Antonov_An-12_JDK.jpg

The An-12 was a soviet military transport aircraft with a 20 ton payload. IAF operated An-12 during the 1961-1990 time span.

AMX-13

AMX-13-.jpg

AMX-13 was a light french tank operated by the IA.It had a weight of 14.5 Ton and could fire 75/90/105 mm rounds

During the 1962 Indo-Sino war 5 AMX-13 were painstakingly airlifted to remote airfield of Chushul in An-12 were they were instrumental in helping IA secure the area,

Read about the airlift in detail :

3.Osa class missile boat

The Project 205 Moskit[1] (mosquito) more commonly known by their NATO reporting name Osa, are a class of missile boats developed for the Soviet Navy in the late 1950s. Until 1962 has been classified as a large torpedo boat. The Osas are probably the most numerous class of missile boats ever built, with over 400 vessels constructed in 1960-1973 for both the Soviet Navy and for export to allied countries.

8 boats were transferred to India in 1971 into the famed "Killer missile squadron" and was used in inflicting tremendous damage to pakistani navy and ports during the 1971 war

4.INS Vikrant (R11)

INS Vikrant (R11) (Hindi: विक्रान्त) (formerly HMS Hercules (R49)) was a Majestic class aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy.[1] She played a key role in enforcing the naval blockade on East Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971

INS vikrant and its air wing played a vital role in securing the now bangladesh during the 1971 war by enforcing an effective naval blockade

5.HAL Cheetah

The licensed built Aérospatiale Alouette II by HAL has played an important role in supporting Indian Army in extremely cold high altitude conditions.
HAL Cheetah formed the only link to the soldiers operating in siachin, the world’s highest battle field. This simple ,mean machine has a glorious service history in the Indian Army and Airforce.
Right now,India’s pride HAL Dhruv can also operate in these terrains where previously only Cheetah could fly.

6.SLR (Self Loading Rifle)

The Self Loading Rifle –SLR was a copy of the famed FN FAL’s british version. This gun was however considered a distinct weapon as its parts were not interchangeable and had several modifications.
The SLR was the standard issue rifle of IA for a long time before being replaced by the INSAS. The SLR offered a paradigm shift for IA from the ordinary bolt action .303 rifle to a modern automatic rifle.

7.Mirage 2000-LGB Combo

Again back to the 1999 kargil war, when IAF took the task of helping the IA in smoking out the well dug in enemy occupying the heights. The situation called for precision strikes and IAF used its premier fly-by-wire fighter the French Mirage 2000 along with Thomson-CSF Laser Designator Pod, known as ‘ATLIS’ which was capable of delivery of Matra 1000 kg LGBs, which were purpose built for destruction of reinforced targets. These weapons were highly capable but were very expensive. It was decided to augment their capability by adding the 1000 lb bomb coupled with Paveway II laser-guided bomb kit. The IAF had ordered a number of these, but they had been supplied with an incorrect part. Because of the nuclear test performed by India, they were on the embargo list and were unable to get the correct parts sent as replacements. Consequently IAF technicians had to remanufacture this part in order to make the Paveway serviceable for use on the Mirage.

8.Folland Gnat

The Folland Gnat was the back bone of the IAF and was licensed produced in India and a modified version was also produced, the HAL Ajeet.

9.Recoilless Rifle
India has been a user of recoiless rifles from the very beginning and it has helped us in several wars and counter terrosist operations. The main use was that of a jeep mounted M40 RCL which took out several pak tanks in Battle of longewala.

U missed su30mki whic they literally FEAR

Never played any significant role yet.

Hawker Hunter

Pakistani infantry and armoured forces attacked the Indian outpost of Longewala in an event now known as the Battle of Longewala. Six IAF Hunters stationed at Jaisalmer Air Force Base were able to halt the Pakistani advance at Longewala by conducting non-stop bombing raids. They attacked Pakistani tanks, armoured personnel carriers and gun positions; and created a sense of chaos on the battlefield, resulting in the Pakistani retreat. Hunters were also used for many ground attack missions and raids into Pakistan, like in the bombing of the Attock Oil refinery, to limit Pakistani fuel supplies during the war.

ur replies ols
mate you forgot to mention the name of another potent weapon which helped us immensely and its still helping us to crack the rebels/terrorists in various parts of India.the weapon is the AKM assault rifle.this rifle has been used by our armed forces for the past 40-50 years and its still going strong as a majority of our armed forces,CAPF,paramilitary forces and nearly all the police forces of India use this potent 7.62 mm calibre Assault Rifle

True the Kalanishkovs have helped us a lot in counter insurgency roles.

Never played any significant role yet.

PT-76

The
amphibious light tank of soviet tank was notorious for its poor fire power (76mm cannon),large size (for buoyancy) and light armour. The PT-76 made it to the list because of its unexpected role during the 1971 war.

During the 1971 war,Indian troops in E.Pakistan had to encounter large and
treacherous rivers of over 50 metres wide.Without any logistical means to cross the river,Indian army relied on the amphibious capability PT-76s to ferry troops across the rivers. Each PT-76 piggy backed upto 11 men, painstakingly crossing 50 metres in over 30 minutes. In total more than a company men were ferried across.

Note:PT-76 was the first victim of the first ATGM ever fired,a TOW.

As much as I dislike the fact the IAF is still using this machine, you've got to hand it to the MI-8/17s, they've played a HUGE role in countless peacetime and wartime duties.

They've acted as MEDEVAC birds, supply birds to troops and for humanitarian missions, SAR birds, gunships, RSHs etc etc

They've served across India from the Himalayas to the Andoman and Nicobar islands

They've served in every battlefield India has sent troops to from JK to Sri Lanka to the Congo.

The -V5s are a pretty decent machine I'll begrudgingly admit but if only the IMRH was around or they'd gone for the UH-60 or AW-101s.

For much the same reasons as the Mi-8/17 family the AN-32s deserve a place on any such list.

These birds that were designed after a specific Indian requirement for high performance at high altitude airbases really are the backbone of the IAF, supporting their missions all over India and form the vital part of the IAF's transport capability/fleet. Often without the glory of the "superstars" like the Super Hercs or now C-17s.

A nice anecdote an RAF officer i knew said who saw one of these take off at IGI airport talking about the An-32's impressive power performance (that's why the engines are on top of the wings, to allow for bigger propeller blades on the mighty engines) "she climbed like a home sick angel with her a$$ on fire!!"

I'd agree with your choice of the An-32. Its a aircraft that is not glamorous at all, but a real work-horse of the IAF. like its predecessor in the IAF, the ultimate "gooney-bird" the DC-3 Dakota!

Aérospatiale Alouette III A.K.A HAL CHETAK
The backbone of IN , CG and IAF rescue, training and liaison role . Now slowly replaced by HAL Dhruv

Stuart Light tanks of british origin.Played a key role in retaking major parts of kashmir in 1948 offensive.Much of the territory we hold in the northern mountanous areas were retaken with these light tanks,as the opposing infantry of tribals and PA had no answer to them.Brilliant use of jugaad by IA,as it was not thought possible to use tanks in such terrain. But IA dismantled the tanks, then assembled them after transportation. Many heavily defended passes were stormed this way.
