Wave energy plants in Brazil

Brazil has seen its first generation of wave power after a machine has started generating energy in the country’s coastal waters. The wave converter prototype has started producing power as part of the Brazil Electricity Regulatory Agency’s (ANEEL) R&D project.

The prototype, which is located on the coast of Porto do Pecém, in São Gonçalo do Amarante, Ceará, has successfully powered all lighting, air conditioning and auxiliary systems in a research plant in the area. This development is an important step for onshore wave power generation in Brazil.

ANEEL said: “This small generation of power represents a great progress, as the Brazilian coast presents good conditions for energy use, due to its proximity to consumers in cities with high population density.”

Rio-based COPPE Submarine Technology Laboratory developed and installed the 50 KW prototype, which consists of two modules, each with a floater, branch and pump. Once fixed on break water, these contribute to a single set of turbines, generator and hyperbaric chamber. ANEEL claims the prototype’s “easy production” gives it an edge over others available on the market.

An additional advantage of this technology is the potential for coupling it with desalinisation systems, ANEEL said. Desalinisation by reverse osmosis is an efficient way to obtain drinkable water from the sea.

The prototype and research plant are part of the “Deployment of Onshore Waves Converter Prototype on Sea Conditions of the Northeast of Brazil” project. Operations and trials for the prototype continue at the plant. The project will continue for 36 months.

We already have installed such plants ......

Tidal Power Plant, is a pilot plant for harnessing the sea waves is situated near the breakwaters of Vizhinjam Port which is about 20 km from Thiruvananthapuram city. The station started its commercial operation in 1991. This oscillating water column (OWC) produces about 150 kw of power.

The nearest airport is the Trivandrum International Airport and Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station is the nearest railway station. Regular buses are available from Thiruvananthapuram Central Bus Station to Vizhinjam.

Then clearly there aren't enough such plants planned. We are talking about producing megawatts of power from them. TN is in a power crisis from the news that we see here. Industries are shifting out of TN into neighbouring states.

I think they should utilize this considering that most of our industries are in the peninsular part of the country.

I dont think it is the same tech and it doesn't address what I highlighted, which is connecting this energy to desalination plants to make pure water!

True ...... We are yet to utilize the full potential .

Wave Energy Plants and Potential in India

India is estimated to have a potential of 40-60 GW of Wave Energy around it cost with the current state of technology. The wave energy potential is estimated to be 5-15 MW per metre of coastline.Note there are no big wave energy plants in India except the pilot plant at Vizinjham Fisheries Harbor near Trivandrum in Kerala.

Maharashtra government has built project would generate 15 to 20 kilowatt of electricity located at Borya and Budhal villages in coastal Ratnagiri district. Similar pilot projects exploiting the tidal waves are being undertaken in 15 coastal villages

Sagar Shakthi is a 1 MW OTEC plant built off the Tuticorn coast which utilizes the temperature different wave energy device.

You are right ..... it does not have a desalination plant but it is a pilot project for a tidal power plant .

Yea saw that but damn bro...... its a pilot project stuck since 1991!!!! Its obvious the f-ing government doesn't want to push forward towards progress.

Sorry bro .... they are busy looting the people and finding new innovative ways to lute further .

They have no time to do something good for the people .

Man I know what you mean. We got so much untapped potential. Its so f-king sad that we cannot relaize it unless we have great goverance. The one and only stumbling block to unlocking our potential. Anyway, you can...spread the word. Or if there is a contact number or email for that pilot project you posted......send them a link to inspire those guys. Hell....I need an email to Modi's team so they get a clue!
