The first phase of elections in "world's biggest democray" kicked off with attacks in five Indian states showing signs of increasing home-grwon insurgencies in the country. On the first day several people were killed. In Jharkand state seven members of Indian Border Security Force along with bus driver and assistant were killed in a landmine explosion. Elsewhere in the state two polling officials were kidnapped. In the state of Bihar over two dozen Maoist rebels shot at a polling station killing two security officials. They then took with them an electronic voting machine and four rifles. In Chattisgarh two police officers in a polling station were shot dead. In another part of the state five polling officials were shot dead. The rebels also shot at six polling stations in other parts creating panic. In Orissa, four polling stations were attacked and voting machines along with a vehicle were set on fire. Guest houses and forest houses were also attacked and damaged.

During the second day of elections, militants attacked border guards as they were carrying election officials in the state of insurgency hit Assam. First a landmine was triggered and then the victims were ambushed injuring two guards. The fighters were believed to be from a tribal group that is fighting for independence.
Atleast 15 insurgent movements are going on in India at the moment that pose a great threat to the country's future unity.
