US threatens Pak over Iran gas pipeline deal - World News - IBNLive

Islamabad: The US has warned Pakistan that it may impose sanctions on Islamabad if it continues to pursue the multi-billion dollar Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project, according to a media report on Friday.

The US raised the pipeline project during the fourth round of a dialogue on energy with Pakistan that concluded in Islamabad on Thursday without any major tangible gains, The Express Tribune newspaper quoted unnamed officials as saying. The officials said US Special Envoy for International Energy Affairs, Ambassador Carlos Pascual, "advised" Islamabad to abandon its plans to import gas from Iran.

He proposed instead that Pakistan should pursue the TAPI gas pipeline with Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and India. A US Embassy spokesperson confirmed that the US is concerned with Pakistan's plans regarding the pipeline project from Iran and that the issue was raised in Ambassador Pascual's meetings.

The proposed Pakistan-Iran pipeline, if built, could raise concerns under the Iran Sanctions Act.
The proposed Pakistan-Iran pipeline, if built, could raise concerns under the Iran Sanctions Act. We are encouraging Pakistan to seek alternatives," said the US Embassy spokesperson. Asked about reported US opposition to the Iran-Pakistan pipeline project at a weekly news briefing on Thursday, Foreign Office spokesperson Tehmina Janjua said the project was in Pakistan's interest as the country is facing an energy crisis.

"Therefore, it is the decision of the government of Pakistan to continue this cooperative project with Iran to ensure that energy is provided to the people as required," she said.

Pakistan has reservations about the TAPI project due to security concerns about Afghanistan and unsettled issues related to gas prices. On the other hand, Iran's South Pars gas field is the largest in the world and production costs for Iranian gas are significantly cheaper than those for gas from smaller fieldsin Central Asia.

The renewed opposition from the US to the Iran-Pakistan pipeline came just days after high-level talks between Tehran and Islamabad on the project. Last week, Pakistan and Iran agreed to speed up the

pipeline project.

The two sides said they intend to go ahead with the project that would bring its first gas flow by 2014. The Iran-Pakistan pipeline was originally meant to have India as its terminal location but New Delhi has not been able to make a firm commitment on the project to date.

An unnamed senior Pakistani official said that despite opposition from the US, Islamabad would not abandon the pipeline project as an agreement had already been signed with Tehran.

The two-day Pakistan-US talks on energy ended without any significant developments despite initial high hopes. The US appeared reluctant to provide significant investment in Pakistan's financially crippled power sector, The Express Tribune reported.

A senior official told the daily that Ambassador Pascual had informed Pakistani authorities that it would be negative to expect large support from the US in the power sector till there is an institutional overhaul in the way it is regulated and managed.

The official said the US had urged Pakistan to introduce major reforms by scrapping redundant policies and implementing new regulations. The latest US stance highlighted the urgency to reform the energy sector that has stalled economic growth.

give us free gas for next 100 years and we will consider your offer! Right now uncle sam cant afford to buy gas for himself! The TAPI has been uncle sam favorite pet for which he led destruction of entire Afghanistan by installing Taliban on promise to advance the TAPI agenda. But too bad talibans betrayed uncle sam and went to Argentinean contractors.

Uncle Sam is in no position to impose sanctions as his jugglar vein is stuck in Afghanistan and Pakistan as a neighbor to Iran has a right to deal with what ever it wishes. Who is uncle sam to meddle in regional affairs especially between two neighbors..this has gotten just too far! Perhaps the fall of soviet union was a big disaster for Asia!

What uncle sam wants is Pakistan energy dependency to remain on LNG container ships controlled by uncle sam and his associates of Exxon Mobil..so he can blackmail when he wishes.

The American are neither willing to invest in Pakistan energy project not willing to bankroll TAPI yet hopes to pressure Pakistan into abandoning its projects of national importance. Perhaps there is a link between US and the rising sectarian attacks by Taliban type groups on Shia pilgrims, after all US led the rise of Talibans in hopes to control TAPI??

Asia needs to build a strong opposition against foreign meddling in regional affairs..the anglo-saxon divide and conquer should not be tolerated any more..the geographic reality of Pakistan and Iran as neighbors is not going away any soon and US should provide a logical counter balance if it has problems of two neighbors having a friendly deal!

This pipeline has no future until u.s is in afghanistan.it will be destroyed by proxies;)

Congrats, you have discovered the logic of US economic ailment..it has sanctioned its own largest trading partner and looking forward to sanction more energy rich countries. US is fast spiraling our of control much like the Soviet Union did and will eventually crash!

US cant terrorize us. Pakistan needs gas since 50% of our energy needs are met by gas from household cooking to transport to industries. With growing Pakistani population estimated to hit 360 million by 2050, Pakistan needs more and more energy to improve people's standard of life. If US really wants us to do away with the pipeline and electricity from Iran then they should give us the same nuclear they gave to India. That is 65 large nuclear reactors with guaranteed fuel. Then we can talk about the pipeline. Why should all the sacrifices be for Pakistan while all the gain be for India and US. 60 years of sacrifices if enough. And any case, when hypocritical US says something is bad for us then we should know it is actually a good thing. Pakistani nation does not like arm twisting one bit.

The presidents of Afghanistan, Iran & Pakistan will have high level meetings in Pakistan in the next week or so (I believe), so it really doesn't matter what the US says, it has no real stakes in the region like these 3 countries do.

Yeah so every time there are issues between the nations, the gas can be shutdown and pk literally controlled

Lets see how our Govt responds ...

Of course I am talking about civil power plants. 65 reactors each with 1500 MW. That is what we need. Why should India get it all?
