US Giving Turkey Access to F-16 Source Codes

PAF should immediately look to working with TAI to use the Turkish code for its F-16's.

No, the agreement contract between Turkey and US, they don't tell anyone including Pakistan. It is commitment terms. It is good reason Turkey is NATO member and accept US radar in its soils.

Turkey will become the first nation among 26 to have the F-16s in their inventories and have the ability to receive information on the F-16 fighters’ software source codes

Good to become first nation. Interesting quotes below.

Access to the F-35’s software source code remains a live issue for the Israelis, as it has been with the Australians [PDF], British, and others. That access is necessary for countries that want to upgrade the aircraft’s computers, and/or integrate new weapons, communications, or electronic warfare systems. Israeli planes generally undergo heavy modifications to incorporate Israeli electronics and weapons systems, and the US has allowed the Israelis access to the F-15 and F-16’s software. In June 2006, Snir said that he is confident the F-35A’s computers will not be an issue. He reiterated that there was:

”...no dispute with the US that IAF F-35s would include Israeli communications and electronic warfare technologies and missiles developed by Rafael Armament Development Authority Ltd.”

The U.S. will not grant Israel the source code to alter threat and jamming libraries, and so Israel must rely on an arrangement by which the U.S. will “make the required software changes to meet any new threat that might emerge in the region.” If they’re willing. When they get around to it.

US is not stupid giving free source codes to Turkey, they know Turkey has good friend of Pakistan. The agreement is clear signed by both countries.

If Pakistan access the source codes without permissions, US will be alert in active monitor systems. The blame goes to Turkey.

So this means that we shold not feel happi about getting source codes by anywayz....???....

Raptor is right .... Nothing for PAF.
For this purpose Pakistan need to ask Uncle Sam otherwise Turkey will pay the price for this move.

Well, it is not PAF's fault. At that time, US and Pakistan were good friends and not enemy (never thought of US aggression). That's why we purchased F-16s to use against neighbor only. Pakistan and PAF learned a lot lesson and slow moving toward to JF-17s and J-10B.

Let the US/NATO make enjoy on Pakistan airspaces violation daily, we didn't have options much and silences. Recently PAF exercises is just fake show.

totally agreed but if usa will give access source code that turkey is demanding

I don't suppose so. USA would not release F-35 sourcecodes to not only Turkey but also any other countries but Turkish domestic missiles will be certified for usage on F-35 for all costumers...

The allowed codes are for weapons interoperability, as in using non-NATO weapons, not for other avionics systems, least of all the flight control codes, which are too well established that it would be foolish to meddle with them.

Turkey's Nationalized F-16s

Turkey’s rival Greece recently bought 30 F-16 Block 50/52 Plus aircraft, but the Hellenic Air Force passed on the option for an additional 10 F-16s, and delayed consideration of new fightersbeyond 2011. Turkey joined the F-35’s production planning phase in 2007, and is moving ahead with its F-16 fleet expansion plans.

It’s also looking to ‘nationalize’ that fleet. Reports in February and October 2011 indicated that Turkey is undertaking internal and external deals to bring almost all aspects of F-16 production, maintenance, and modification within its reach. TAI has re-opened its F-16 finishing line for the Peace Onyx IV buy, and already performs in-depth maintenance and upgrade for the TuAF and other countries.

The biggest step forward in that process would be access to the F-16’s software source codes, which is reportedly the subject of an agreement with the USA.Source code access would be more convenient for the Turks, and could be lucrative if some of the F-16 operators who already deal with Turkey for maintenance and modifications choose to purchase locally-designed weapons and modifications. Recent years have seen greater efforts to develop its own equipment, and Turkey’s SSM procurement agency has a project called Ozgur, which aims to develop:

”...an avionic suit [sic] solution and integrating that suit to a fighter A/C and by execution of integration and certification of a set of defined weapon systems including locally developed weapon systems…. The developed solution will be integrated to a fighter and the certification of the whole system including weapon systems will be performed.

”When added to Turkey’s existing industrial capabilities, source code access could also serve as a partial form of insurance against damage to their American alliance. It would allow substitutions of local equipment for American-supplied gear as necessary, in a country that can already assemble and maintain the aircraft. That confers a great deal of independence.

It would not be complete insurance, however, because Turkey cannot produce the F-16’s engines. After the Tienanmen Square massacre led to a cutoff of American military cooperation, the Chinese found themselves in this boat with their J-10. They engineered a switch from American to Russian propulsion, but their different weights and characteristics affected the aircraft’s whole design, and took more than a decade – even with complete access to their fighter’s design and source codes.

Turkey Orders 30 F-16C Block 50s etc. for $2.9B

Do you know what kind of technology transfer was on offer to India?

The software running in an F-16 has millions of lines, and has multiple layers of security and modes of operation. Turkey will gain access to only some layers in an "approved" manner undoubtedly.

USA won't give source codes, already their laws don't let to give source codes to any country. Only they let to use our own codes on F-16s. Havelsan has been working on this project last years. I think, it is a good agreement for install our weapons and avionics without US's permission and help to own aircrafts.

Source Codes, Bugs, tracking devices ...... That's Why i personally am not a big fan of F-16s deals. I believe that Pakistan is not going for any more of these machine. fighter is awesome but strings make it far less awesome in real combat. Even for Turkey, it would not be that easy to get this agreement. It is just US administration that has agreed. Let's see what Israeli lobby does to prevent this agreement. They would not sit quiet, that's for sure!

The access will not be complete, and whatever modules are made available will work only in certain "approved" modes.
