US drone strike kills seven in Pakistan
Strike in northwest is latest since Islamabad began a major offensive in June

At least seven militants were killed in a US drone attack targeting a Pakistani Taliban compound near the border with Afghanistan on Wednesday, officials said, the latest such strike since Islamabad began a major offensive in June.

The incident took place in the Lawara Mandi border village, some 60 kilometres (40 miles) west of Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan tribal district where the Pakistani military has been fighting to wipe out long-standing bases of Taliban and other militants.

US drone strikes have picked up since the military offensive in Waziristan after a near six-month hiatus. Since June 12 five drone strikes have been reported in the tribal areas by Pakistani officials.

“A drone fired two missiles at a compound in Lawara Mandi and at least seven militants were killed,” a senior security official in the region told AFP.

The official said the dead included local and foreign militants.

Local intelligence officials said that some Uzbeks and members of the Haqqani network, which is blamed for numerous bloody attacks in Afghanistan, were also among dead.

Pakistan’s semi-autonomous tribal areas on the Afghan border have for years been a hideout for Islamist militants of all stripes — including Al Qaida and the home-grown Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as well as foreign fighters such as Uzbeks and Uighurs.

Washington pressed Islamabad for years to take action to wipe out sanctuaries in North Waziristan, which militants have used to launch attacks on Nato forces in neighbouring Afghanistan.

The assault by Pakistan’s military was launched after a dramatic attack by militants on Karachi airport, which killed dozens of people and marked the end of a faltering peace process with the Pakistani Taliban.

More than 550 militants and 29 soldiers have been killed in the assault so far, according to the military, though the area is off-limits to journalists, making it impossible to verify the number and identity the dead independently.

Pakistan routinely protests against US drone strikes, which have been targeting militants in the tribal areas since 2004, saying they are a violation of sovereignty and counterproductive in the fight against terror.

But most analysts believe the resumption of the drone programme after it was mothballed reportedly to give Pakistan space to carry its negotiations with the Taliban is evidence of collusion between the two countries — strongly denied by the government and military officials.

More than 800,000 people have been forced to flee from North Waziristan by the assault, with most ending up in the nearby town of Bannu.

There have been fears that many top militants also fled, including fighters from the feared Haqqani network which is blamed for numerous bloody attacks in Afghanistan.

I'm sure the real figure is like 1 militant and 6 civilians.

Pakistani establishment not even doing the token protest anymore. Would love to see what happens after the drawdown when dependence on Pakistan goes down drastically

NW has been evacuated.

There are terrorists in hard to reach places, why not take out their compound when you have intel.

According to process US shares intel with PA and they give go ahead for drone strike.

In a way this is quite amusing. If this had happened last year, there would have been an outrage here. Now after PA's operation in NW they can't talk about collateral damage, sovereignty etc.

too many Indians here ,i guess:p:
aaru ki khobor,,biya khon ketiya patiba?

See here is the thing....our government and establishment have always been pro-American...we have always been in their camp.

However I would say the people of Pakistan and even the establishment included are all living in a denial....they are amazingly confused and willfully ignorant. And of course....the huge useless ego. The people believe Pakistan to be the sword and castle of Islam...the savior of Ummah.....yet they can not still bring their mind around to the fact that how much both these countries have relied on each other. Heck US and Pakistan even have the same friends....KSA and GCC for instance.

Basically dil mein chor hai....so it is better to close our eyes and burn the American flags rather than accept the reality and move on.

But the moment any Pakistani gets the opportunity to get the US visa he or she will literally run to the US embassy on all four :)

The same old story translates to these drone strikes as well.......it is a definite collaboration but still you have the establishment and politicians protesting drone strike.....feeding the people and their own egos. How do you suppose Pakistan became the clown nation of the world overnight?

pakistan better not protest else the aid would dry double quick !

Aid money is not going anywhere anytime soon....as I said both the countries are reliant on each other....of course the balance is in favour of US naturally.

The protests, as I stated, are for local consumption...to make the society and ourselves feel good only...that's it.

Americans had a bad day in Afghanistan yesterday they lost a General , this was expected , when things are going bad in Afghanistan they look towards Pakistan , which is what has led them to their present predicament.

As noted earlier the drones are nowhere to be seen when 100 militants attack Pakistan via Afghanistan also Fazlullah is safe from drone attacks.

Now this is wrong, this will only increase tensions & problems for Pakistan. US wants problems to erupt in Pakistan & they are doing whatever they can to inject venom.

The problem is corrupt Govt. has never done anything to stop drone attacks, even when Ex Air Marshal said "give us the order & we will shoot it down" his answer to corrupt politicians brought complete silence in the hall.

To all these Lagar Bagarz .. NW is empty all the civilians are in Bannu ... So who s there rite now ? The Drone and the PA army killing ? Yr Paid Pigs.
