Foreign Minister Wang Yi paid an official visit to Pakistan from Feb. 12-13, where he held talks with Sartaj Aziz, adviser to the Pakistani prime minister on national security and foreign affairs, about bilateral relations, international issues of common concern and President Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit. Wang also met Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and attended the launch ceremony for the Year of China-Pakistan Friendship. At the end of his visit, Wang said that China and Pakistan have reached a consensus on almost every issue, once again echoing the round-the-clock strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries based on mutual understanding, trust and support.

The United States has changed its strategy in South Asia from keeping a balance between India and Pakistan to preferring India over Pakistan, and it has even joined hands with India to exert pressure on Pakistan. Pakistan has also witnessed ceaseless terrorist attacks on its soil because of the spillover from instability in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of US troops. Hence Pakistan faces rather unfavorable internal and external situations, and China’s policy towards Pakistan has drawn much attention from the international community.

The round-the-clock cooperative friendship between China and Pakistan boasts a solid foundation. Pakistan, an Islamic country, serves as a crucial bridge linking China and the Islamic world. Pakistan is also a staunch supporter of China on major international issues and issues concerning China’s core interests. And China actively supports Pakistan in safeguarding its national security, territorial integrity and economic development.

In the new era, China-Pakistan cooperation is much more enriched. China’s One Belt and One Road strategy has injected new impetus into bilateral relations. Pakistan is an important country in the initiative of building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. While some other countries still adopt a wait-and-see attitude, Pakistan displays unequivocal support for the initiative.

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is an important part of the One Belt and One Road. The framework of the corridor has been accomplished and the project has entered its implementation stage. The corridor will not only enhance connectivity and economic cooperation between China and Pakistan, but also extend farther to Afghanistan, Iran, and even India, becoming a channel linking China, South and West Asia, as well as a model for the implementation of the One Belt and One Road strategy.

China-Pakistan cooperation faces the pressing issues of stabilizing Afghanistan and fighting terrorism. The anti-terrorism drive and stability in Afghanistan are not only beneficial for maintaining security in South Asia, Central Asia and western China, but also create a sound environment for the implementation of the One Belt and One Road strategy. China regards Pakistan as an active force in the fight against terrorism, and supports Pakistan playing a larger role in the anti-terrorism drive and regional security.

Prior to Wang’s visit, the first round of China-Afghanistan-Pakistan Trilateral Strategic Dialogue was held in Kabul. At the meeting, China and Pakistan committed to safeguarding peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region, as well as deepening practical cooperation in the fields of counter-terrorism, security and the economy. Pakistan has been playing a unique and irreplaceable role in solving Afghan problems, Wang said.

It should be pointed out that the primary task of Wang’s visit was to prepare for Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to Pakistan. Thus during this visit Wang focused less on other major issues, but it can be expected that during Xi’s visit, the two countries will announce significant measures to promote bilateral relations and reach a series of important cooperation agreements, forging a new upsurge in bilateral relations.
