On August 7, the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced that the U.S. State Department has approved a possible $1.5 billion sale of two Lockheed Martin Corp Aegis combat systems as well as new anti-submarine warfare equipment to Japan. According to the DSCA press release:

The Government of Japan has requested a possible sale of two (2) ship sets of the MK 7 AEGIS Weapon System, AN/SQQ-89A (v) 15J UWS and CEC. Additional items include associated equipment, training, and support for its Japan Fiscal Year (JFY) 2015 and JFY2016 new construction destroyers (DDGs). The ACS and associated support will be procured over a six (6) to seven (7) year period, as approved by Japan in budgets for JFY2015 and JFY2016.

The weapons deal, likely to be approved by Congress, aims to enhance Japan’s capabilities to defend against a ballistic missile attack. Japan is currently upgrading and modifying all of its Aegis destroyers (the Kongō-class and Atago-class) with the Aegis ballistic missile defense (BMD) system.

In November 2013, the Japanese government announced that it would procure two additional Atago-class vessels, equipped with the Aegis-BMD system, to be commissioned in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

“The addition of two (2) new AEGIS DDGs will fulfill Japan’s mission goal of acquiring eight (8) ballistic missile defense capable ships and will further enhance interoperability with the U.S. Navy, build upon a longstanding cooperative effort with the United States, and provide enhanced capability with a valued partner in a geographic region of critical importance to Japan and the U.S. Government,” DSCA said.

DSCA also noted that the two new Aegis destroyers “will afford more flexibility and capability to counter regional threats and continue to enhance stability in the region,” especially as “Japan currently operates AEGIS ships and is proficient at using evolving ballistic missile defense capability.”

As I reported in June (See: “US and Japan Successfully Test Ballistic Missile Killer”), the United States and Japan recently conducted a successful test of the Aegis BMD with a live-fire drill involving a jointly developed new ballistic missile interceptor, the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA, at a U.S. Navy sea range. TheSM-3 Block IIAis designed to destroy short- to intermediate-range ballistic missile threats in space.

Tokyo’s other likely purchase, the AN/SQQ-89(V) Undersea Warfare / Anti-Submarine Warfare Combat System (USWCS / ASWCS) will equip the new Atago-class destroyers with modern ASW capabilities. DSCA emphasized that Japan’s naval forces have been “effective at employing the AN/SQQ-89 UWS for undersea surveillance and detection. Japan has demonstrated the capability and commitment necessary to incorporate CEC into its fleet and will capably assimilate this technology into its operations.”

they are idiots, there systems are reliant on the US. an indigenous design with US system intragation would have been better. they want to compete with china but theres no chance. they are building two more destroyers, yeah ok guess what, south Korea has really good (enormous) destroyers which are better.

2 Sets? I thought the Izumo also loaded with AEGIS 19J radar too?? JMSDF need about 6 AEGIS System. And the JMSDF need another 2 Atago Class destroyer

Dude, why would relies on US tech a problem? US AEGIS system have been on the edge of the technology which most country, including China can only dream of. Beside, China is not directly in competition with Japan, but US 7th and 3rd Fleet. JMSDF is always going to be on the support role, and due to Japan-US mutual defensive treaty, US in contingency would leave their 7th fleet ship under JMSDF control. SO it is important for Japan to drill on the US system as much as possible.

Until Japan shred their pacifist stance, it will do more harm than good for Japan to develop their own system.

Good Lawd the Japanese Imperial Navy is comin!! Damn the CO and pass the torpedoes!!! Sorry @Nihonjin1051 i really have to say that!! Cant help it!! Just a query, arent you guys one of the most technologically advance in the planet? Why dont you make your own stuff!?

japan is building 2 more destroyers.

the aegis system is good but it should incorporate some Japanese equipment example the missiles. the US can see what japanese ship are seeing. the US even spied on japan!

isnt china building there own version of the aegis system

Our relationship with Japan goes much deeper than just ordinary friendship. If we did not occupy Japan afer WW2, it should be a communist country by now since the OLD Uncle Jo Stalin declared war on them at the closing days of the war. @Nihonjin1051 please elaborate.

Besides even friends spy on each other. Where did i read that article where in MI5 agents were spying on the French Aircraft Carrier. Ill post it once i find it.

Japan and the US has been on the front of the communist front like Germany during the Cold War. Or maybe Japan just wants the best for their navy ships. But then again, that is just me..

You do know it does not work that way right?

Just because you use the same system with the US then they can see EVERYTHING....

You still need to take care of L3, data filtering and also communication issue.

well unfortunately it does work like that. the US is good to it allies but that does not mean the US does not have to spy on them.

the aegis system is basically a huge network now the network would be more effective if it have more thing to talk to and take actions.

so is china working on a similar system compared to aegis?

LOL...how much you actually know about communication. You have the meaning and understanding of Radar system all wrong.

Radar itself cannot communicate with other, you need to put the radar scan into a datalink network. Had the network been compromised, it does not matter if you use a US AEGIS, UK AEGIS or Iran AEGIS if they had one, you data will be forced share with whoever compromise your datalink network.

Using US radar alone give US NOTHING, US does not uses the same C4I and COMSEC system used by Japan. US spy on everyone, but US ain't god, you need a portal or something like that or actually have a USN officer sitting inside a JMSDF CIC to spy on Japan.

China is working on a AEGIS, but are they as good as the US AEGIS Phase 4 3 dimensional Radar? That's not even really up for debate.

Why dont you make your own stuff!?

Why spend money to develop your own when one has access to the best technology in the Whole World.

Being allied to the Global Hyper Power, the UNITED STATES, has its perks, of course.

Heck even competitors of America have to resort to cyber espionage and intellectual property theft to even --- catch up. LOL!!!!!

Hehehe, thanks bro, yes we are slowly waking from our long slumber. :)

And in regards to the JMSDF , the 4 fleets that compose of the JMSDF are all integrated to the US Naval Battle Net, in other words, system wise, we are holistically integrated, which means a perfect harmony of the Combined Fleet with the US Navy's Fleet(s), particularly the 7th, 5th, 6th Fleets.

We're talking about mandatory naval exercises at least 5 times a year for over 70 years now, talk about cohesion, bro? LOL!!!

I guess the JMSDF and the USN are stuck together like sugar.

;)

:lol::lol::lol::devil::devil::devil::devil:

We want the best of the best. Tried and tested. Nothing comes close to the US Navy, bro. Nothing.

As a former JMSDF officer, my respect goes to USN boys in blue. Worked with them on various aspects. Damn fine boys. Almost as good as JMSDF, of course. ;)

Japan and the US has been on the front of the communist front like Germany during the Cold War. Or maybe Japan just wants the best for their navy ships. But then again, that is just me..

No power in this earth ever defeated the Japanese Imperial Navy except the US Navy. Russian Navy? We annihilated their entire Baltic Fleet (the cream of the Russian Navy) in the 1905 Russo-Japanese War in Battle of Tsushima Straits. Their entire Fleet went down to the depths of the Sea of Japan. The Chinese Navy? Twice we eviscerated them the first time in the 1894 Sino-Japanese War; second time in the 2nd Sino-japanese war. The Kriegsmarine? In WWI we destroyed the German Naval Squadron docked in Tsingtao, as well as the ones in Marshall Islands. The Royal Navy? The Dutch Navy? We annihilated their Asian Squadrons in 1942.

The only Naval Power strong enough to truly resist the Imperial Navy was the US Navy. That's why we have respect for the US Navy. Power and Strength, Glory and Legacy of winning.....

In other words, the US Navy is the Best of the Best. She broke both the Imperial Navy and the Kriegsmarine simultaneously. Even in the Cold War, the Soviet Navy was tracked by the USN.

America is Naval Power, period. With Proven Naval Tradition and a track record of eviscerating even the eviscerators.

LOL!!!!

@Nihonjin1051 why does James here dislike Communists ? :(

They're fun people ! :partay:
