Time for Pak to Mend Relationship With US: Khar

Pakistan today said it was time to "move on" and mend relations with the US, signalling a climb-down from its demand for an unconditional American apology for reopening key NATO supply routes to Afghanistan.

"It was important to make a point. Pakistan has made the point and we now need to move on and go into a positive zone of trying to conduct our relations," Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said.

Khar made the comments during a news conference when she was asked about reopening supply routes to Afghanistan that were closed after the cross border NATO raid in November last year that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

Khar's remarks assume significance as they came a day before a meeting of the Defence Committee of the Cabinet, Pakistan's highest decision-making body on security issues, that is expected to discuss the reopening of the supply routes and the country's participation in a NATO Summit in Chicago during May 20-21.

"As far as the question of an apology is concerned, parliament has categorically said that the government should seek an apology from the US. We have (sought) an apology from the US," she said in response to another question about Pakistan's demand for an unconditional apology for the NATO attack.

Khar did not say whether Islamabad would insist on the apology.

Official sources told PTI that President Asif Ali Zardari was not averse to participating in the NATO Summit if Pakistan and the US are able to agree on some sort of face-saving arrangement.

Khar's remarks seemed to indicate that the government is preparing the grounds for reopening the supply routes, a key condition for participating in the NATO Summit.

The Foreign Minister said Pakistan needs "closure" on the issue of the NATO air strike so that the country could "move on" with the task of resetting relations with the US.

The routes may open soon, but the damage done to Pakistan's perception is going be long term, unfortunately.

Yes i agree Pakistan's perception has been damaged but are you looking yet again at the scenario from your "USA perspective"?
What about the damage done to them in the international field. Their recent antics and behavior hasn't damaged anything? Have you forgotten how they took the lives of our soldiers on 26/11 and have yet to offer a formal apology? Don't you think the "trust factor" works both ways? Their exploits and ventures in Afghanistan hardly put them at the top of anyone's respect list. P1ssing on the dead, slaughtering innocent people, keeping fingers of the dead, and of course burning the Quran.
Don't you see it works 2 ways VC - if you want respect and build a relationship then give respect to gain it?

its the other way round...they haven't issued an apology on killing Pakistani soldiers....

I hope that the damage to Pakistan is worth whatever benefits it can get. Two way streets may not have the same amount of traffic in both directions, but I agree with you in theory.

sanu note wikha sada mude benay....everyone has a price..our leaders bargained their price...now they will receive more dollars..one wonders why is america shipping so much hardware into afghanistan when it says its planning to withdraw in a year or so.....is it planning to bomb iran and then pull off a ground invasion?

will Pakistan have to raise another army that will fight for and defend the citizens of F.AT.A?
will Pakistan need another airforce that will take an oath to bring down the drones?

why arent Pakistani fighter pilots doing their job?why arent they shooting down drones?did they missed the oath where it said they will defend the motherland?

why dident PAF responded when salala was under attack for 2 hours?
why dident PAF scrambled when abbottabad raid was pulled off?

why does PAF says that they dident scrambled cause they noticed american hornets near the border?
cant F-16'S take on F-18 hornets?
if not then why is Pakistan still buying F-16's?
is it cause of commissions and kick-backs?

will Pakistani decision makers keep filling their pockets and continue waging a war against their own people at the wishes of american zionists?

We have been left alone to fend off this crisis and none of our so called "brotherhood" and Ummah peddlers show up to even make a statement on humanitarians grounds. How many of our "Ummah Brother" nations offered condolences for Salalah Accident which was a tragic loss of life for numerous Pakistani army men?

None, Zero..Nadda!!

I wouldn't call soldiers, "employee".
Pak can't really employ brute force especially against US. They are doing what they can, i.e. change in policy etc.
