ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf in a message of condolence to President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, has expressed his sympathies for the victims of earthquake that struck Tabriz on Saturday killing around 180 people.

He said, “Our prayers are with our brothers and sisters in Iran affected by this natural calamity”.

The Prime Minister offered to extend assistance to the Government and people of Iran at this hour of trial.

The Prime Minister has issued directives to the concerned authorities in Pakistan to immediately establish contact with their counterparts in Iran and determine the nature and the kind of assistance, which Pakistan can extend to the people of Tabriz.

He said, “Natural calamities pose a serious challenge to all our countries. No region is immune to it. We need to develop a comprehensive strategy at the national, regional and international levels in order to deal with natural disasters”.

Natural disasters are an unfortunate & unavoidable occurrence. May those who perished rest in peace. Natural disasters' contingency plans deal with early warnings' methods & required courses of action in the event of a disaster. Most governments as far as I know make use of them. Businesses are required to create contingency plans too, but unfortunately many businesses do not bother to do so. These plans aid in partly reducing the casualties involved, but there is a limit to their effectiveness & applicability depending upon the availability of resources & the nature of the disaster. In any case, I hope Pakistan is able to benefit Iran at this time of need.
