The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) is edging closer to a decision to procure China's Type 041 Yuan-class (Type 041) platform to meet a long-standing requirement for up to three submarines.
IHS Jane's understands that senior RTN officials favour a move to acquire the Type 041, although the navy's submarine procurement committee - headed by Admiral Narongpol na Bangchang, assistant commander-in-chief of the RTN - has yet to make a formal ruling.
An RTN spokesman confirmed to IHS Jane's on 29 June that the RTN's submarine procurement committee is considering several options including China's offering, but that "no decisions" have yet been made.
