It is years now that Iranian western cities are witnessing a very unhealthy dusty environment. This phenomenon started couple of years ago and it is getting worse day after day. Experts claim it to be a direct result of Saddam Hussein drying up march lands in south of Iraq during Iraqi invasion of Iran 1980-88.

Even some experts announced that the dusts contain dangerous levels of Uranium. Uranium that being used by Western allies when overthrowing Saddam regime back in 2003 and earlier at 1991.

Different governments of Iran tried with different approaches, from distributing MARCH (oil based stuff) on Iraqi lands of trouble to recreating palm gardens around the area. Non of these initiatives actually worked as Iran could not finish doing its therapy for unknown reasons.

People of Iran are suffering hard from these dusts. Specially in Western side of Iran, and for most, the Iranian city of Ahvaz which already had its own sources of air pollution from industrial complexes around it.

I wonder if there is any cures for this horrible disaster that affect the lives of millions of people in Iraq, Kuwait, KSA and Iran.

Look at these photos taken from Tehran just today;

I think in the future there should be a union between Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran. Iran can help us with oil and can build a better economy. Anyway its pre s to talk about this. But I honestly believe that the current nation states are only the way they are because of superpowers and are crumbs of the British empire and its hegemony.

Did you know these dusts can make other crops ill too?
Did you know during Iraqi invasion, Iraq destroyed millions of palm trees in Iran and Basra area in south of Iraq... See how we are still suffering from this maniac...!!
wish it would be just palm trees. saddam destroyed and made flat cities with their residents..

but they should again Plant palm trees to stop dusts and and get Economic benefit.

Hand this over to @Serpentine and @Daneshmand and tell them to put their backs into it !

On a serious note : This is interesting to hear about and I'd like to know what sort of remedies have the Iranians and other countries who face a similar problem, have come up with to address this issue !

I hope that something along ecological lines is envisioned; I wonder if some species of plants can be planted perhaps on the periphery of the dry marsh lands (as you mentioned) in Iraq that would help provide more traction to the soil and prevent it from becoming that dry and dusty !

In many parts of India people uses cow dung to cover the surface of the soil.that way even when it gets too dry it don't turn into dust. It's cheap, reliable and 100% Eco friendly.maybe Iran and Iraq can invest into covering the soil (not necessarily with cow dung though.;))

we use toilets thank you!!..only if we import siht from India!! but seems practical but not for the level of sanitation Iranians are used to.. they get sick in a sec if we implement your suggestion.. whoever siht it is!!!

What---your cows use toilets!!!!! Damn.

You might need to plant 4 or five rows of tress and brushes all along the border to slow down the wind----.

Iraq?! It's more plausible that Iraq forms an Union with other Arab states, especially those in the Levant, than the other three you mention.

Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan is not a bad idea, but very far fetched. To start with, you have to totally crush all sorts of sectarian and religious extremism, before establishing a union based on shared historical and cultural heritage.

it was about "(not necessarily with cow dung though.;))" part!!

Indian roads could have places where you could shit and a pipeline would transfer all the shit to Iraq to keep the soil nutrient rich. Indians love open defecating so this could be a viable solution.

Draining the marshes started back in the 50's for agriculture but yes it got a lot worse when saddam diverted the Tigris to go after the people living in the marsh.

" Following the US invasion, embankments and drainage works were broken open, and the marshes began to reflood. The Central Marshes showed little recovery through 2003, but by early 2004 a patchwork of lakes had appeared in northern areas; there was flooding in southern areas which had previously been dry since the early 1990s. There has been some corresponding recolonization by the natural marsh vegetation since that time, and return of some species of fish and birds, although recovery of the Central Marshes has been much slower compared to the Huwaizah and Hammar Marshes; the most severely damaged sections of the wetlands have yet to show any signs of regeneration"

Guess it takes a while to undo so much damage.
