Tajik President on four-day visit to India

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) Strengthening defence ties with Tajikistan would be top on agenda when President Emomali Rahmon arrives on a four-day state visit to India beginning tomorrow.

Seeking to push its 'Connect Central Asia policy', Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will hold wide-ranging talks with Rahmon, who has been at the helm of affairs in hydrocarbon-rich Tajikistan for 20 years.

Discussions on Indian assistance for upgrading the Ayni base and setting up a military hospital in Tajikistan are also expected to figure in the talks. This is the Tajik leader's fifth visit to India and it coincides with the 20th anniversary if establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

India played a key role in developing the Ayni airbase and continues to cooperate with Tajik authorities in maintaining it.

On Monday, Rahmon will be accorded a grand ceremonial welcome on the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhawan after which he will hold meetings with President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari. Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj and the External Affairs Minister S M Krishna will also call on the Rahmon. Rahmon is also scheduled to visit Goa and Bengaluru. India unveiled its Connect Central Asia policy which includes a proactive multi-pronged diplomatic thrust to expand ties with the energy-rich Central Asian nations -- Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan.
