An Israeli drone has been downed over the southwestern Syrian city of Quneitra, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, local media reported Sunday.

At the time it was downed, the aircraft was flying over a region that has been monitored by the U.N. peacekeepers since 1974 according to Damascus military official reports.

No further details have been given and no comment from the Israeli officials has been released so far.

The unmanned aerial vehicle is reportedly am Israeli-ade Skylark I model. The drone has system for tactical surveillance and reconnaissance as well as a range of 20/40 km, making it one of the most commonly used drones in missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Israel has been developing and using drones since the 1970s, especially for use in Gaza and Egypt.

Earlier this month, Israel conducted airstrikes on targets in Syria with the government of Bashar al-Assad saying it that eight Israel Air Force warplanes participated in strikes close to the international airport on the outskirts of Damascus.

Israel has carried out several airstrikes on government positions inside Syria since the outbreak of the armed conflict in the Arab country in 2011.

Damascus has called on the U.N. Security Council to condemn Tel Aviv for its illegal activities against Syria.
