Bombing Strikes Ceremony in Iran

By WILL YONG and ALAN COWELL

TEHRAN — A suicide attack wounded dozens of Shiite Muslims at a highly symbolic and emotionally charged mourning ceremony near a mosque in southeastern Iran on Wednesday, the official IRNA news agency said. Another report said that 15 people had been killed.

At least one bomber detonated a belt of explosives outside the Imam Hussein Mosque in the city of Chabahar near the border with Pakistan, IRNA said.

Press TV, a state-run broadcaster, said there had been two attackers but there was no immediate confirmation of that report. But initial accounts of both the casualties and the number of attackers were initially confused. One report quoting emergency workers said 15 people had been killed.

The bombing coincided with the mourning period leading up to Ashura, which commemorates the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Islam’s prophet Muhammad in the 7th century.

The mourning period is marked in many countries including Iraq and Pakistan where there have been attacks on Shiite Muslims during one of the most important ceremonies of their religious calendar.

One of the attackers detonated a bomb outside the mosque and the other struck from inside a crowd of worshippers, state TV reported.

The semi-official ILNA news agency said three people were involved in the bombing. One died when explosives detonated. One other carried explosives which failed to detonate and was captured by police. A third man was arrested, the report said.

Chabahar is one of the largest cities in the province of Sistan-Baluchestan which has a largely ethnic Baluch population who are Sunni *******.

The city is not known for being a target of terrorist attacks which mainly focus on the provincial capital Zahedan. Chabahar has in recent years seen a growth in prosperity as a result of domestic tourism and a successful free trade zone.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The bombing seemed to underscore the continuing threat of religious and ethnic violence in Iran, unrelated to political upheavals since the June 2009 elections.

Last July, a Sunni militant group in southeastern Iran whose leader had been executed by Iranian authorities claimed responsibility for one of the deadliest terrorist attacks Iran has seen in years: a double suicide bombing outside a mosque that killed 26 people and wounded 300.

The victims included members of the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, officials said, which the militant group Jundallah has singled out repeatedly in the past.

The group claims to be fighting on behalf of Sunni Muslim members of the Baluch ethnic group in Iran and Pakistan and has been a thorn in the side of Iran’s security services for years, repeatedly bombing Zahedan and other southeastern cities.

It claimed responsibility for an attack in October 2009 that killed 40 people, including 15 members of the Revolutionary Guards.

Iran said it struck a major blow against the group earlier this year after it captured a Jundallah leader, Abdolmalek Rigi, and executed him in June.

Will Yong reported from Tehran, and Alan Cowell from Berlin.

TEHRAN: A suicide bomber blew himself up at a mosque in the Iranian city of Chabahar on Wednesday, killing 36 people and wounding more than 50 as Shiites marked the climax of Ashura, a Red Crescent official said.

“The terrorist attack targeted pilgrims outside the Imam Hossein Mosque” in the town in Sistan-Baluchestan province, he added.

Unlike most of Iran, Sistan-Baluchestan has a significant Sunni community and has seen persistent unrest in recent years by the Sunni militant group Jundallah. – AFP

TEHRAN, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Iran on Wednesday accused the United States, Britain and Israel of involving in the deadly suicide bomb attack in the country which left 39 killed and more than 50 others wounded.

The attack occurred in front of the Imam Hussein mosque in southeastern port city of Chabahar on Wednesday when people gathered for a mourning ceremony on the religious occasion of Tasua, local satellite Press TV said.

Tasua is commemorated by Shiite Muslims, marking the eve of the day when Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was killed.

According to media, the Pakistan-based Sunni rebel group Jundallah (God' s soldiers) has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

Chief of Iran's Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi accused the United States and Britain of involving in the attack, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported.

"The experience from the past incidents indicate that the U.S. and U.K. intelligent services are behind the crimes like the Wednesday morning bombing in Chabahar," Boroujerdi was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Iranian Deputy Interior Minister Ali Abdollahi told official IRNA news agency that the equipment and facilities nabbed on Wednesday revealed that the bombing agents were supported by the intelligent services of the region and the United States.

Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said Wednesday that such terrorist acts "are funded by the U.S. and Israeli intelligent services," according to local Mehr News agency.

"In the past, the United States recruited some in Afghanistan to create discord among Shiite and Sunni Muslims (by carrying out terrorist acts)," Larijani was quoted as saying.

Chabahar is the Iranian port city on the coast of Oman Sea situated in the southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province with the majority of ethnic Baluchis and Sunni Muslims.

"Israel and the U.S. intelligent services are behind these terrorist acts and they should know that such behaviors will receive response from the Iranian nation," Larijani said.

According to the official IRNA news agency, Director General of Sistan-Baluchestan provincial Forensic Medicine Office Fariborz Ayati said some women and children were among the victims.

An unidentified police commander of Sistan-Baluchestan province was quoted as saying by ISNA that four policemen were among the victims as well.

According to an earlier report by ISNA, the explosion occurred at 10:30 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) in front of the governor's office building of Chabahar in Sistan-Baluchestan province close to an emergency car of the Red Crescent Society.

Over the past three days, there had been threats of bomb attacks against mourners in Sistan-Baluchestan, and the emergency staff has been on alert, Iranian Red Crescent Society chief Mahmoud Mozaffar was quoted as saying by ISNA, adding that among the injured, six were emergency workers.

Meanwhile, the state IRIN TV said three suicide bombers were involved in the attack. Only one of them succeeded, the second was shot dead, and the last was arrested.

Never heard of this Pakistan based Jundallah group ...

Iran's deputy interior minister says some local Pakistani officials have issued travel documents for terrorists involved in Wednesday's deadly bombing attack.

"Terrorists get their travel documents from some local Pakistani officials," Ali Abdollahi told IRNA, stressing that Tehran believed these officials were “connected” to the terrorists.

At least 33 people, including women and children, were killed and 83 others were wounded in an attack, which occurred at the Imam Hussein mosque in Chabahar on Wednesday.

People were commemorating the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam.

The terrorist group Jundallah has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Jundallah, a Pakistan-based terrorist group, has carried out numerous bombings, assassination attempts, and terrorist attacks in Iran.

Its leader Abdolmalek Rigi was arrested by Iranian intelligence forces in February 2010 and executed in June for 79 counts of crimes, including armed robbery, bombing operations and armed attacks on police and civilians.

"The confessions of Abdolmalek Rigi confirm that the base of these terrorists is in Pakistan," the Iranian official said.

Abdollahi said terrorists are believed to receive training in Pakistan, criticizing Islamabad for ignoring Iran's repeated calls to adopt proper security measure.

Chabahar Governor Ali Bateni announced on Wednesday that Iran's security and civil forces had arrested one of the perpetrators of the attack.

The United Nations, the United States, Britain, France, Jordan and Lebanon's Hezbollah movement have condemned the terrorist attacks.

As Jana said:

Open secret much?

And Jandullah is funded created by ??? none other CEEEEEE IIIIIII AAAAAA the US Of AAAAA

And would you have any conclusive evidence apart from the much-visible political rivalry between the two countries, Ms. Jana? I do not think that the C.I.A would have been willing to share its innermost secrets with a media person such as yourself.

It is too premature and too shallow to simply blame some country based on surface evidences.

Oh the irony. This is a government that openly arms and supports terrorist cells and they are blaming Pakistan saying some officials support terrorist outfits. Iran is not in a position to be talking about terrorism in other countries period.

Precisely the reason Pakistan should never support Nuclear Iran. For us a bombed Iran by US/Israel Joint Venture is much better! It's our strategic rival.**** Iran.
