On Christmas Eve, South Korean activists of the Korean Peninsula-International Peace Organization launched 4 giant balloons carrying 800 pairs of winter socks across the border.

The group sent the socks to help those suffering from food shortages, and hoped the socks could be traded for food on the North Korean black market. One pair of socks is believed to bring in about 22 pounds of corn which would last about one month for one person. The group plans to send 1,000 pairs of winter socks every month until the North and South unify.

South Korean activists have regularly sent leaflets over the border criticizing the North Korean regime, as well as news of the Arab Spring uprising in the Middle East and North Africa. Following the death of Kim Jong-Il, defectors from North Korea launched about 200,000 leaflets across the border calling for an uprising in the communist state.

In the past, North Korea has threatened to fire across the border to stop the balloon launches, however, the South Korean government has not made efforts to stop the activists.
