The SOM system is an autonomous, long-range, low-observable, all-weather, precision air-to-surface cruise missile. The SOM-J variant is tailored for internal carriage on the F-35 aircraft. The companies will jointly develop, produce, market
and support SOM-J for internal carriage on the F-35 aircraft or external carriage on

Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Executive Vice President Rick Edwards and Roketsan Chairman of the Board Eyüp Kaptan signed the agreement.

“Lockheed Martin has a long history of partnership with the Republic of Turkey, and we look forward to working closely with Roketsan on this very important project,” Edwards said. “SOM-J will provide the F-35 and other aircraft an exceptional capability to meet the most challenging mission requirements. We look forward to combining the skills and know-how of our two great companies to produce a world-class system to meet customers’ expanding needs for long-range, survivable cruise missile technology.”

“At Roketsan, we believe this teaming will increase the attention on SOM-J and present a superior solution to fulfill the requirements of anti-surface warfare capabilities on the F-35 aircraft,” Kaptan said. “We value our partnership with Lockheed Martin and look forward to additional business opportunities in the future.”

WASHINGTON, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - TheUS military contractor Lockheed Martin has signed off on a deal to produce cruise missiles for fifth generation fighter jets F-35 in partnership with the Turkish firm Roketsan, a statement published on Lockheed Martin's website said.

"Lockheed Martin has a long history of partnership with the Republic of Turkey and we look forward to working closely with Roketsan on the very important project," Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Executive Vice President Rick Edwards said in the statement published Wednesday.

Edwards confirmed that the missiles will be tailored to the specific needs of the F-35 Lighting II jets.

The two companies will jointly develop and produce the missiles.

Roketsan, which was founded in 1988, participates in NATO programs in the defense of Europe.

Lockheed Martin, which also developed the F-35, has touted the jet fighter to be a fifth generation jet with stealth evasion capabilities, supersonic speed and extreme agility.

However, the jet has been the subject of a lot of criticism regarding pilots' complains about being unable to view some areas outside the cockpit.

In a 2013 US Inspector General report, criticism was levied upon both the US Department of Defense and Lockheed Martin for not fully implementing rigorous designs for the F-35 aircraft.

Lockheed Martin and Turkey's Roketsan sign F-35 missile deal

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Lockheed Martin (LMT.N) and Turkish missile manufacturer Roketsan signed an agreement Wednesday to produce and sell Turkey's SOM-J air-launched cruise missile for the F-35 Lightning II combat jet, the companies said.

The agreement, signed in the Turkish capital Ankara, envisages the development, production, marketing, selling and supporting the SOM-J for internal carriage on the F-35 or external carriage on other aircraft.

"Lockheed Martin has a long history of partnership with Turkey, and we look forward to working closely with Roketsan on this very important project," said Rick Edwards, executive vice president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

Edwards also said the agreement aimed to meet the increasing demand for long-range, survivable cruise missile technology.

"Within the (F-35) Joint Strike Fighter project there is no other cruise missile with the capabilities of the SOM-J," Ismail Demir, Turkish Under-Secretary of Defence Industries said.

"I think the SOM-J will be an important option for other countries in the project including the United States."

Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) is a development and acquisition program intended to replace a wide range of existing fighter, strike, and ground attack aircraft for the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark and Turkey.

"We believe this joint effort will increase awareness of the SOM-J and present an excellent opportunity to fulfill the requirements of the anti-surface warfare capabilities on the F-35 aircraft," said Roketsan's chairman, Eyup Kaptan.

The SOM System is an autonomous, long range, low observable, all weather, high precision air-to-surface cruise missile, the joint statement said.
