Should Turkey remove millitary conscription entirely and make it a volunteer army ?

IMO it will make the military more professional and effective.

absolutely. a professionally trained soldier is way more effective than a 6 or 12 month "train"ed conscript.

But aren't we are a warrior nation. "Her Türk asker doğar" ?. Of course I agree not to see dying our poor country guys.

But conscription serves a very important nation building effort as well, it introduces the population to the country, it provides the state with service at below market price, and it keeps a good number out of the economy till they are better able to be absorbed, it imparts youth with skills for their life time. The arguments for a professional army are unassailable, that is if all nations wanted from their armed forces was to go to war.

1.Professional

2. Millitary Conscription Died after USA losing the War in Vietnam with his G.I ´s.

Conscription armies are useless. Look at what happened to Argentinian soldiers in Falklands... Turkey should have a specialist commando forcelike the SAS but bigger..

Do not underestimate the training of conscripts, they have been praised by NATO commanders a lot lately. We teach them in a few months, more than most armies do in a professional career. It gives us a population of trained men whom can be recruited in case of a mobilization.

What Turkey have is unique, and should never be abandoned. On the other hand we keep increasing the numbers of professional troops in the armed forces like it should be.

We already have :)

1- Kayseri-Airborne Commando Brigade
2- Bolu Helibourne Commando Brigade
3- Local Gendermerie Commandos
4- Local Army Mountain Commandos
5- Air Force Paratrooper Corps
6- Amphibious Marines Brigade
7- Maroon Berets (More than 14.000)

In fact, we already have a larger elite force. Totally about, 68.000-70.000 trained men with elite leadership ;)

I don't know if we are warrior nation or not but i am not a warrior. I am not a soldier and I don't want to be. World is totally different from 100 years ago and most of modern nations keeping relatively small but highly trained army. Sooner or later turkey will follow developed countries.

I don't have to add anything. You said it all.

Trust me man, I know well what do you mean, I know how that feels, if this was a few months ago, I wouldn't agree with you. But know I definetly agree with you ;)

Some pacifist sh.t you have there :) Russian Federation still has conscription do you think they aren't developed? Brazil has conscription with twice the population and GDP of Turkey :)

I think of the Army as a production line, raw material(pussies) enter from one side and product(men) come out from the other :) I'm proud with this system. Most people would not want their daughter to marry with someone who hasn't done his duty to the country. On this rare occasion I'm with majority here. :)

Just prfessionals not possible in current Turkey,so a semi would do it.
Conscription and pros.

I saw a Turkish unit in a mock action, last year. I though I was a fit person who could hold his own, but these guys wrestled me to the ground easy.

Even though those guys were conscripts they took their job seriously. I talked with them after the exercise, though they didnt like the conscript system, they agreed that it promoted unity, nationalism, and offered them better knowledge for what to do as a caree

The job of a Soldier isnt to die for his country. Its to make the enemy soldier die for his.

It is not about pacifism and my definition of being a developed country is not only about money. It is about democracy and human rights. Forcing someone to do something is not right in this century. I already have profession. If I wanted to be a soldier i would go to military academy.

Also if you train me for 2 months i still would be useless since all my life i live in a city and even walking for 1 km is long distance for me. How can i fight in mountains with only 2 months training. It is waste of both my time and governments money.

But when some day like independence war of turkey, my country needs people to fight for survival of the nation, this time i will gladly serve for my country. But in peace time, conscription is useless.
