Saraiki nationalist movement refers to the efforts to establish a collective identity for the Saraiki (Urdu : سراییکی) linguistic group in the Punjab province of Pakistan and to secure an official status for the language. As of 2002, there were approximately 15 million Saraiki people , who were speaking the Saraiki language , in central Pakistan in the Punjab , Sindh and Balochistan provinces, mainly based in the former princely state of Bahawalpur .

Beginning in the 1960s,Riaz Hashmi Saraiki nationalists have sought to gain official language status and to create a new province out of southern Punjab. This has led to a proposed separate province Saraikistan , a region being drawn up by activists in the 1970s . The 1977 coup by General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq of Pakistan, a centralist ruler, caused the movement to go underground. After his death in 1988 , the Saraiki movement re-emerged with the goals to have a Saraiki language recognised, to have official documents printed in Saraiki, a Saraiki regiment in the Pakistan Army , employment quotas and more Saraiki language radio and television.

Several parties are working on this mission like Pakistan Saraiki Party , Siraikistan Qaumi Movement , and Saraiki National Party . Majid Kanjoo is one of the leaders of Saraiki speakerstan movement.
Aims of Saraiki Movement
The Saraiki movement was the combination of language planning and efforts to establish a collective identity to convince Saraiki speakers and others of the status of Saraiki as a separate language distinct from Punjabi .It also aimed to establish Saraiki as a separate language by invoking shared awareness of the local past among the people living across the Saraiki region speaking different dialects of the Saraiki language. Consensus on the name Saraiki for all the dialects spoken in the Saraiki region was a part of this reaction. Creation of a Saraiki identity in south-western Punjab involved the deliberate choice of a language called Saraiki, as a symbol of this identity. Language was chosen as a unifying symbol because a local language serves its speakers as an identity marker that can successfully separate them from other ethno-linguistic groups that share identity on another basis, such as culture, traditions and religion (in this case Islam). It was chosen also because it was an aspect the leaders thought will serve to unite the group and will be useful in promoting the interests of the group and ethno-politicians.

Like many such movements, the Saraiki movement also started in the name of cultural revival and promotion. What really lay behind it was the lack of development of South Punjab region which was not voiced in the first phase, ethno-nationalism is generally a response to perceived injustice. In general, the slogans and demands of the Saraiki nationalists have been coupled with linguistic rights and economic grievances, but in the late 1990s and the following decade, the linguistic issue has ceased to have much importance. This is evident in the charter of demands made at the end of a Saraiki conference held in December 2003, in which, out of twenty-one demands made, only one pertained to language. (Daily Khabrain, 2003)
How was the Saraiki Identity Created?
The Saraiki nationalist intellectuals reacted to the a perceived threat to their language and identity and set out to develop an ethno-linguistic consciousness. The efforts towards this cause were directed towards creating a Saraiki identity. Initially this was done to counter the "misleading label of Punjabis". These endeavors have been termed as the Saraiki movement'. Attempts have been made to get the support of the Saraiki speaking middle-class using economic reasoning to support the partition of the punjab on linguistic lines.
Outcome of the Saraiki Movement
The Saraiki movement has been successful at some levels. It is responsible for creating a sense of collective identity among the Saraiki speakers even if it has not been successful in forming a pressure group like that of the Awami League , Jeay Sindh Quomi Mahaz , MQMand Awami National Party . Now the Saraiki is counted as one of the many languages of Pakistan. Saraiki was also included in the question about languages in the censuses of 1981 and 1998. Despite all this, however, the symbol of language which came out as the most powerful symbol in this movement has not yet acquired much evocative power' . Saraiki speakers are still not as emotionally attached to their language as the speakers of some other regional languages of Pakistan are. The Saraiki movement helped to give a collective name Saraiki' to different dialects and made people embrace this name for their collective identity but it ultimately failed to influence ordinary Saraikis to take pride in their language or consciously increase its usage in different domains.

Saraikistan
Saraik (Saraiki , Punjabi , Urdu : سراییکستان) is a term used by some Seraikis to denote the southern region of the Punjab province of Pakistan , inhabited by Saraiki -speaking people . Many people contest the status of Saraiki as a separate language. . Though, it has overwhelming influence of Punjabi and Sindhi ; Seraiki can be called a separate language of Indo-Aryan Family. When compared to its sister languages: Sindhi and Punjabi, Saraiki is far smaller and much behind in literature and in many other ways.Historically speaking, Saraiki, before Independence, never created a sense of separate Saraiki identity particularly in Southern Punjab.Customs and traditions practised by the people of Southern Punjab have largely been similar to those of Punjabis and Sindhis. However, national recognition of Saraiki as a separate language, giving it an official status, a Saraiki province, a Saraiki regiment in Army, establishment of Saraiki radio and television are among primary demands of Saraiki movement.

In 2002, the Saraiki nationalists claimed that there are over 30 million Saraiki speakers in Pakistan, mostly in southern Punjab, and also in the adjacent parts of Sindh and Balochistan provinces, mainly based in the former princely state of Bahawalpur (princely state) .

Beginning in the 1960s, Saraiki nationalists have sought to gain language rights and lessen, what the nationalists propagated as, "Punjabi control over the natural resources of 'Saraiki' lands". This has led to a proposed separate province Saraikistan, a region being drawn up by activists in the 1970.The 1977 coup by General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq of Pakistan, a centralist ruler, caused the movement to go underground. After his death in 1988 allowed the Saraiki movement to re-emerge openly with the goals to have a Saraiki nationality recognised, to have official documents printed in Saraiki, a Saraiki regiment in the Pakistan Army, employment quotas and more Saraiki language radio and television

Demands
The Saraiki Nationalist have a demand a separate Saraikistan Province from the southern parts of the Punjab Province.
The Saraiki Nationalist have a demand of more budget allocation to the southern parts of the Punjab Province till the above demand is accepted.
A demand of Saraiki being accepted as a separate language rather than a dialect, and its use in official documents for southern Punjab along side Urdu.
Though Saraiki has been accepted as a separate language in Pakistan,it is not used for official purposes.Only two languages are used for nationwide official purposes in Pakistan;Urdu and English

idk why are we dividing our country on ethnic bases, i mean this is the time when we really need to unite. these politicians have divided ppl too many times to just get some votes, its just sad man.

i agree if it is not based on ethnicity .. more provinces should be made but only for administrative reasons

HOw come they never get any vote in that area.
Point is everyone wants to divide Punjab and its not for administrative purpose. The only reason is that one s h i t t y part PPP wants to decrease the size of another s h i t t y party PMLN to rule.
I wonder no one talks about making an Urdu speaking province in SIndh, HIndko in KPK and Pushtun in Baluchistan????

Even if someone from Karachi talks about a separate Karachi province not on the basis of ethnicity then there will be war. I remember Sindhi Nationalists broke down the office of PML-N after they demanded a Karachi province.

Yes why not just divide the whole damn country while we are at it ... everyone seems to want their own province or country to me these are no Pakistani's these are people who want to divide our nation and taking advantge of the current status of the nation shame on these people and they call their selves Pakistani... Pakistan should and shall stay just the way it is and has been since birth simply.

Brother main reason is no province is biggest like punjab in the world if a problem occur on any government servent in south Punjab.Multan and Bhawalpur Area he will go to Lahore for a Singal Signature of Big government officer.
Well! New provinces should be made administratively, I personally think and not on the bases of language or culture, we are first Muslims and then Pakistani.

yes I think south Punjab have been ignored all times, our politcians have very narrow vision and they don't have a broad vision.
can't understand why they put every big fascility in Lahore like Universities, hospitals etc, why dont they spread it all over the province, in this way a lot of mutual ineractions among the people will happen and more employments will be created and also the cities will have lesser migration pressures that in returne sustain the natural enviornment of the city.

alos "fakelife" watch out who is leading this Balochistan province movement, Mohamad Ali Duran, Musharaf's spkes person, who told so many and so bluntly lies and he worked against the idealogy of Pakistan, who stopped him during his ministry and having such good ties with the dictator to make Bahawalpur a province.

a person travelling from Multan or Bahawalpur to Lahore for his basic needs reaaly is in miserable condition, so we should have services distributed all over and not only in few cities.

Why do people equate creation of new provinces to breaking of the country, I can never understand. Study the US Administrative system, all their states have different laws that have been defined and refined over the years to suit the lifestyles of those particular states. We need to abolish the current provinces that divide us on ethnic basis and adapt the American system which promotes harmony, competition and development on administrative basis and not on ethnic basis.

The main and Real reason is Development and services which big cites like Lahore and upper punjab have south punjan dont have.all money goes to upper punjab here in south punjab people say Kamay Hum Menat hum Karay aur Khay Wo.(we Earn and do hard work they eat all)

Baluchistan is even bigger, divide it first !!!!!
I am not against new provinces. My view is that all division be declared provinces. But dividing only punjab shows some malign intention !!

divide make 100 provinces but not even one on ethnicity!!! i am totally against ethnic provinces!! admistratively we need many more provinces!!

The demand for a Searaiki province is a combine political move of PPP and PMLQ, and the ostensible reason is to cut PMLN down to size. Any step that is taken towards the creation of new provinces on ethnic lines will spur the ethnic disharmony throughtout the country.

This new demand for the formation of new provinces, incited by the two above mentioned political parties, has cropped up at a very inappropriate time. Pakistan is already surrounded with plethora of problems that demand full attention of the state - its economy has crumbled, its political parties have turned its financial hub into a battlefield, the growth of un-controlled population, illiteracy, shortage of drinking water and electricity, and its armed forces are fighting against the terrorists on various fronts, just to name a few of all the problems.

I hope the common sense ( that is unfortunately not so common among Pakistanis) will prevail and the top priority would be given to the problems I have mentioned above. New provinces can be created at any time on administrative basis - but the economic stability and a rapid restoration of law and order throughout the country should be the utmost priorities.
