While cats continue to take over the internet, a Saudi cleric decided to issue a ban on taking photos with the furry felines – or with anything else in the ultraconservative kingdom.
Prominent cleric Saleh bin Fawzan al-Fawzan, a member of the powerful Saudi Council of Senior Scholars, was more like a grumpy cat himself when told that “taking pictures with cats has been spreading among people who like to be like the Westerners.”

The issue of the feline “trend” was raised by an audience member questioning the cleric’s views on the selfie phenomenon during a televised broadcast.

Initially confused about the matter, Fawzan repeatedly asked “what” to the question before outlawing taking pictures with anything.

“Taking pictures is prohibited if not for a necessity,” the sheikh eventually snapped after much confusion over the selfie concept.

“Not with cats, not with dogs, not with wolves, not with anything,” he said.

It isn’t the first time Saudi authorities have banned things under their strict interpretation of Islam.

In January, the kingdom’s grand mufti outlawed playing chess because he said it encourages gambling, while in February women were temporarily banned from entering a Starbucks branch in Riyadh after a “gender barrier” wall collapsed in the shop.

Saudi clerks gotta compete with CII in terms of who can be more stupid. I seriously think there is a game being played behind the scenes, i.e. who can be more drunk before appearing in front of public. Good thing is that they are accelerating the demise of their influence on people.

Man that is waste of tax payers money wait Saudi has no tax no wonder any idiot can issue any BS opinion...which just so happens to translate into a very fearsome strong word in Arabic called fatwah and goes viral over the net the min West catches news of it...

Yaar anyone can issue an opinion...You dont issue it you say it until and unless its to be discussed to be written in their laws (do they even have any? though the Quran was their law so how can such stupidity seep in) I think its just scare and craziness picked up by media to make it a hyper subject and give it more air than it needs

Still mental cleric not realizing his position to say shit like that!

Unless this "Aalim" proves this from Quran and Sunnah, his opinion is hi opinion.

Besides, Islam is not in people what they think and do and as a Muslim, I do not follow what a "molvi" preaches. Prophet Muhammad SAWW said stick with "Quran and Sunnah" and that is your yard-stick. Unless this molvi proves his fatwa in the light of Quran and Sunnah, his opinion is non-binding and just his opinion. And Molvi is as likely to be wrong as you and I am.

When despotic regimes rule, the regimes use 'their' clerics for distracting attention away from their illegitimate existence. Hence, those 'clerics' get busy issuing fatwas about selfies with cats. Talking about the real problems is too dangerous, overnight their traces will disappear into thin air. It happens regularly in BD.

Wrong heading. He meant all animals not just cats and he even named a few :-)

Reminds me of a urdu joke regarding a man coming to a cleric asking him for advice on what to do after committing bestiality with a cat... @Armstrong , do you know this one?
