SAARC students get awards

NEW DELHI: Forty one students from India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka received medals, cash prizes and merit certificates for their outstanding performance in the Ignou-Unesco Science Olympiad 2010 on the occasion of Children's Day on Sunday.

Five toppers received awards of excellence for their overall performance which includes Md H Rahman from Hyderabad, Chelvaniththilan Sivabalan from Jaffna, Jeevana Priya from Hyderabad, Govind K from Tiruvanantahpuram, and Ayush Singhal from Jaipur in the order of rank first to fifth. :cheers:

Facilitating the winners, VC of Ignou, V N Rajasekharan Pillai, said: ''The key objectives of the Olympiad, organized by Ignou and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) are to provide young people from the SAARC region with a unique competitive platform where they can prove themselves.
Through this initiative students are being encouraged not only to participate in national and international science and IT competitions and programmes, but also to instill a feeling of belonging to national and global science fraternity.''

A total of 4,384 students of the class XI from all SAARC nations - Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, India and Sri Lanka — participated in the Olympaid. In August, the examination took place in 102 centres in these countries.
