Russia in Talks With India on Delivering 3 New Guided Missile Frigates

Russia and India are discussing a delivery of three new guided missile frigates for the Indian Navy, the deputy chief of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – India has six frigates of the Talwar class, the forerunner of Project 11356, which are built at the Yantar shipyard in Russia’s westernmost Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad.


"The final decision on handing them over to a third country has not been taken yet, but we know that talks involving Rosoboronexport [Russian state-run arms exporter] are in progress," USC Vice President Igor Ponomaryov told RIA Novosti.

The first sea trial of a Project 11356 frigate took place last year in the Barents Sea. The frigate, displacing 3,850 tons, is designed for anti-ship and anti-submarine warfare as well as for air defense missions. It can operate independently and as part of convoys or naval task forces.

The news is half correct.

India is negotiating now for 3 outright purchase of hulls but there is a twist. India is wanting Pipavav to license produce frigates of Project 11356. Thus unless the licence production thing happens, its very difficult for any purchase.

Also Ukrainian MIC is in doldrums. So engines will remain an issue unless we find an alternative or we ensure Ukraine supplies are proper and non problematic.

Indian shipyards are totally full with orders

No spare capacity left ; So either private sector like Pipavav will make these ships
or Imports will happen

Licence produce new ones in Pipavav from scratch. The existing ones will be completed in Russia as bringing such items to India and completing it here is costly and will cause delays by many years. Pipavav cannot overnight produce a ship and will take lead time to do such capital works.

So basically import 3 and licence build 4-6 or more under follow on from pipavav

You're right, doesnt have to be Shivalik(though this may be cheaper), but a newer designed frigate by Navy's design bureau. I think this is better than dealing with Russia's platform in the long run.
