The Indian Air Force has halved its demand for a new Russian-built advanced stealth fighter jet in a move to cut costs and reduce imports, India’s Tribune News Service reported Tuesday, citing unidentified Indian military sources.

With about 18 planes in each Indian fighter squadron, New Delhi’s purchase of the developmental Sukhoi T-50 aircraft has been downgraded from a promised 127 aircraft to just 65, plus a handful of additional T-50s for training pilots to fly them, according to Tribune.

The new Sukhoi stealth fighter was co-developed by Russia and India, and has a reported price tag of $100 million per unit, according to Tribune. India and Russia finished development of a two-seat version specifically for the Indian Air Force in 2013, but have yet to finalize a contract for manufacturing and delivery of the new planes.

The T-50 fighter is Russia’s answer to the U.S. F-22 stealth fighter jet, and is the first new Russian fighter aircraft designed since the fall of the Soviet Union. It sports advanced electronics and sensors, can be used as a fighter jet or a ground attack plane, and is highly maneuverable.

While single-pilot versions of the T-50 are expected to enter service with Russia’s Air Force next year, Sukhoi’s new jet has been dogged by diminished interest from the Russian government as well.

In March, Deputy Defense Minister Yury Borisov said the Defense Ministry was curtailing its initial order of the T-50, which is scheduled to enter serial production next year, from 52 fighters to a mere 12.

The Air Force will evaluate the performance of the first 12 fighters, and then decide how many the Defense Ministry can afford, Borisov said, promising that the military will continue to procure highly capable Su-35 multirole fighters for the next several years.

The Su-35 is a post-Soviet modernization of the Soviet-designed Su-27 Flanker fighter jet and is Russia’s current top of the line aircraft, noted for its extreme maneuverability. The Su-35 and other members of the Flanker family of jets derived from the older Su-27 are Russia’s most popular military export items, according to newspaper Vedomosti.

Vedomosti on Tuesday reported that the Defense Ministry will make good on its promise to Sukhoi to buy more Su-35 fighters at the upcoming MAKS airshow outside of Moscow at the end of August.

Citing unidentified defense industry sources, Vedomosti said the Defense Ministry will sign a 100 billion ruble ($1.5 billion) contract for 48 brand new Su-35 fighters, which will keep Sukhoi’s production lines busy for several years — the largest Russian fighter contract since 2012.

Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation, which owns Sukhoi, declined to comment on the Vedomosti report. All details will be announced at the MAKS signing ceremony, the company’s press service said in an e-mail on Tuesday.

Sukhoi is expected this year to complete deliveries of Su-35 airplanes ordered by the Defense Ministry under a 66 billion ruble ($1 billion) contract for 48 planes signed in 2009, when the aircraft were cheaper.

su 35 is awesome and easy to produce
but the T50 is not , it is new generation fighter, running to problem is normal for a new plane

T 50 will certainly face tough times before being ready to fly as it has so many new features and SU 35s is a fighter which is ready for induction

FGFA development finished in 2013?? what does this mean?? prototype is ready ??

It's very simple. Do u remember we debated on one my thread? The thing is we need BVR fighter . Best us to go with west and we choose Rafale but since it's in a doldrums either we need to opt for EF or PakFa or Su35 stealth variants to take on China . PAF is mere joke for iaf for sure but we can't afford China to take lead in BVR which will take our sumo is for a ride ... Ordering 3 squadron of PakFa is the better choice as it can be further developed into FGFA which is more advanced . Rafale deal is on the edge of being called off. We proposed our face saver deal yet they don't give in . It's time to move on 100 + 6-10 million for weapons and training is a good deal ... But still we might go for Su35S as it help us set up Super sukoi assembly line. Let's see what happens .

I read somewhere.... Su-35S fifth generation upgrade - By Russia & India.... Is this true... where does this fit in?

Is it a backup and is this why we are going for a face saver Rafale deal...

Since T50 is running into troubles, dont expect even single plane before 2020.......and can someone clear doubts about a modified 4++ gen su-35 russia was willing to give us in case rafale failed???we should go for it......its avionics can be updated to PAK FA model....and semi stealth could be achieved... By using certain shaping tech to modify air intakes and wings......hope su 35 comes in as a stop gap between FGFA and SU-30MKI

Designing was completed in 2013. there is an Indian team in Russia since late 2011 or early 2012. What is in progress is the signing of a contract which will result in a full scale prototype. This will result in 3 to 4 prototypes being delivered to the IAF. Post this series production will begin.

Quicker way? Get the excess capacity of the PakFa in. Train in that. Proceed from there.

But Russian's have ordered only 12 fighters(pakfa) for now??how will india get 64 before Russian air force???Su 35 could bridge the gap for now....any more on these Su 35's 4++ planes with improved avionics, AESA and al41 engine???

They have capacity in their plant. They are taking delivery of only 12 due to the RuAF budget constraints. Which means they have excess capacity as stated by the Russians themselves. Why go for a Su-35, when you can bring forward the PakFa? As for the engines and AESA, they can be applied in tranches. Same way we first took delivery of the Su-30 and later the MKI.

Actually it is a good news we will get t50 fifth generation which is for Russian air force. And also on the other hand we will continue the R&D for our version of fifth generation having Indian indigenous sub systems.
So in both the cases we will get fifth generation fighters. It will also help IAF for solving their problem of dwindling squadron numbers. And also provide IAF with fifth generation capabilities.
Presently we should bust the rafale deal completely( which is impossible because Mr Modi directly asked for g2g so it will be big embarrassment for him).
And give contract to EFT which will also maintain our relations with EU in which France is also included.
EFT are willing for no bar on TOT and also are ready to lower the prices.
My 2 cents.

why buy stupid rafales when we can have a 5 gen fighter at just $100 million dollars, we are used to Russian weapons and interface....our pilots feel secure and these fighters are best......by the time J-20 joins the PLAAF......Indian air force will also have around 3 squadrons.......i think we should divert all the money from rafales into PAK FA project, +$20 billion dollars invested now could get us around 180+ fighters and then we can also get Russian support on AMCA......it would be better for us to get Russian fighters, at least they wont sanction us if we turn against the US.....:agree:

It's not completely false I guess . Because this was told by Russian ambassador to India . We knew something went wrong for Rafale to be selected as f uckin LOWEST BIDDER !!! How did it even happened ?
