An entire country, neighbouring Romania, is discussing an incident, during which a young bear was shot by hunters. Even President Klaus Iohannis commented.

The incident happened in the city of Sibiu, where the bear was sighted, walking the streets on Wednesday. Shortly after, local authorities reported, the “big brown bear” had been shot, after attempts to tranquilize the animal had failed. When a photo of the dead bear surfaced, outrage spread in the entire country. The picture showed a rather small and young bear, partially drenched in blood, lying on a flower pot.

It seems the little bear might have been more scared than any of Sibiu’s inhabitants. All over the Romanian media, and the internet, a storm of criticism erupted. In their attempts to resolve the situation, the local authorities had failed completely, many commentators wrote. Because of its size and age, the bear had not posed any threat to people. Most Romanians believe, this incident could have been handled properly, without killing the animal.

Now this case has both legal and political implications. The police in Sibiu opened a criminal investigation into the use of a deadly weapon within a city. The Environment Ministry in Bucharest wanted to open a separate investigation.

Several NGOs have teamed up to organize a protest march in Sibiu today. Hundreds of participants are expected to take part.

Even Romania’s President, Klaus Iohannis, commented on the scandal involving the bear. He said he was saddened by the way it was killed. “When the bear was trying to climb up a wall from a flower pot, it did not seem aggressive at all”, he said. Somebody should have come with a tranquilizer gun.” Simple and clear procedures for cases like these should be created, the President, who was quoted in virtually all Romanian media, stated.

A year and a half ago, a similar incident was recorded, when another bear entered Sibiu. In that case, the animal was captured alive and taken back to the mountains.

UPDATE: The chief of police of the city of Sibiu was dismissed and prosecutors have filed criminal charges against him after tapes surfaced in which he was ordering his officers to run the bear down with their cars.

Hope someone runs him down with their car. He should be given at least 15 years imprisonment.

You can see the character of a person in the way he treats animals.

Indeed and that's why I'm very proud of my countrymen who stood up and due to their pressure and outcry that garbage is now jobless and under criminal investigation. If not for people making a big deal out of this,it would have faded from public atention.
