Qatar World Cup laborers receive $0.76 an hour: Report

Workers building a stadium for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar receive as little as USD 0.76 an hour, a report says.
According to a Wednesday report by British newspaper The Guardian, some of the 100 workers constructing the 40,000-seat al-Wakrah stadium are working for up to 30 days a month and being paid less than USD 8.27 per day.
Stadium workers said their manager has held their passports, in a move which violates the organizers’ own welfare charter, the daily added.
Earlier this week the paper published a report which said some laborers had not been paid for more than a year and were living in filthy conditions.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Qatar World Cup’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy told The Guardian that there are challenges “with calculation of overtime pay and hours, and we are working with the contractor to rectify any non-compliance.”
The committee also said in a comment cited by Al-Jazeera news channel website that it was “actively looking into the matters raised by the Guardian,” adding that it “takes allegations of labor regulation violations very seriously.”
Qatar is spending around USD 226 billion on infrastructure ahead of the tournament, but the country has been accused of human and labor rights violations over its treatment of migrant workers.
In February, the Pravasi Nepali Coordination Committee, a Nepal-based human rights organization, said over 400 Nepalese workers lost their lives on World Cup stadium construction sites in Qatar.
Amnesty International has also censured Qatar for the ruthless exploitation of foreign workers.
Migrant workers in Qatar live in extremely inhumane and sordid conditions and they are deprived of any workplace security.
